Climate planning is about more than creating a document. It is a process that helps communities identify priorities, develop projects, and prepare for future opportunities.

A Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) can help Tribes define long term goals, build project pipelines, and strengthen their ability to pursue future funding. Planning can also support investments in areas such as housing, transportation, energy, infrastructure, economic development, and community resilience.

By identifying community needs and priorities today, Tribes can be better positioned to pursue projects and investments that align with their vision for the future.

All Tribe's priorities are unique, which means every Climate Action Plan is unique. The most effective plans are built around local values, goals, and community needs.

When people hear "Climate Action Plan," they often make assumptions about what that means.

Some assume climate planning is only about reducing emissions. Others think it only benefits environmental programs or that every community follows the same roadmap.

In reality, Comprehensive Climate Action Plans are community-driven planning tools that help Tribes identify priorities, explore opportunities, and prepare for future investments. They can support goals related to housing, energy, transportation, economic development, infrastructure, and much more.

Every Tribe has different priorities, which means every Climate Action Plan looks different. The strongest plans reflect the values, goals, and vision of the communities they serve.

When you hear the words "climate action," what comes to mind?

For many people, it's solar panels. While renewable energy can be an important part of a community's strategy, climate action planning encompasses much more.

Climate Action Plans help communities evaluate opportunities across many sectors, including transportation, housing, waste management, emergency preparedness, infrastructure, economic development, and natural resource protection.

Every Tribe has unique priorities. For some communities, reducing energy costs may be the focus. For others, it may be protecting cultural resources, strengthening community resilience, improving infrastructure, or preparing for future funding opportunities.

Climate planning is not about a one-size-fits-all solution. It is about identifying what matters most to your community and creating a roadmap to support those goals.

Many Tribal communities are already addressing challenges related to infrastructure, energy costs, emergency preparedness, housing, economic development, and natural resource protection.

A Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) helps bring those conversations together into a shared vision for the future.

Rather than reacting to challenges as they arise, climate planning helps communities identify priorities, evaluate opportunities, and create a roadmap for future projects and investments.

The planning process is community-driven and focused on local values, needs, and goals. Whether the priority is reducing costs, improving resilience, protecting cultural resources, or preparing for future funding opportunities, a CCAP can help communities take the next step.

Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians is supporting Tribal participation in climate planning through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Indian Energy is accepting applications for its Unleashing Tribal Energy Development funding opportunity.

With $50 million available, this funding supports Tribal energy planning, infrastructure, renewable energy, and community scale energy projects that strengthen Tribal energy sovereignty and resilience. Applications are due July 24, 2026.

Many of the project types supported by this opportunity are identified through Tribal Comprehensive Climate Action Plans (CCAPs), helping Tribes prioritize projects and prepare for future implementation funding.

For Tribes who are Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians members, we are still accepting Interest for the ATNI Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) project. These plans provide a strong foundation for identifying and prioritizing projects that may be eligible for funding opportunities like this one. Send inquiries to [email protected].

While every school district is unique, many face similar challenges: limited budgets, competing priorities, and the need to do more with existing resources.

That's why Resource Synergy is partnering with The School District of Philadelphia on a 7-school (17 sensor) pilot program, focused on improving waste management operations through data, technology, and practical implementation strategies.

Jack was onsite installing sensors for this pilot project, which will demonstrate both on-call service this summer and optimized scheduled service next fall.

School districts across the country are looking for ways to operate more efficiently while advancing their sustainability goals. We're looking forward to working alongside district staff to identify solutions that reduce administrative burden, improve service visibility, and support informed decision-making.

Projects like this demonstrate that the challenges schools face may be different in scale, but the need for practical, cost-effective solutions is universal.

As Project Manager, she will be leading our collaboration with Berk Consulting and the Washington State Department of Ecology's Use Food Well Washington project. Mariah brings deep experience in food systems, waste reduction, organics diversion, and community engagement. She holds graduate degrees in urban planning and public health from the University of Washington and previously worked on the Washington Food Rescue Map, also commissioned by the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Climate Action vs. Climate Adaptation

What's the difference, and why it matters for your Tribe.

Many Tribal Nations have been doing adaptation work for years: protecting homes, health, fisheries, and cultural resources from impacts already being felt. That work is essential and is only half of the picture!

A Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) plans from the opposite angles: how a community can reduce its own contribution to climate change while building energy savings, efficiency, and qualify for or build new funding opportunities, all on the Tribe's own terms.

Through our partnership with the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, Resource Synergy collaborates with member Tribes to develop customized CCАPs, fully funded through ATNI's EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant. We guide each Tribe through the planning process, bringing the technical expertise, data analysis, and structured framework needed to build a plan around their priorities, their knowledge, and their vision for the future.

The Washington Department of Ecology hosted a great summit on Wednesday, discussing the state's Organic Management Law.

What a difference one year makes!

One participant in the room described the difference as an evolution from "overwhelmed" to "problem-solving."

We are fortunate to have such a great organic team at Ecology, and such wonderful partners here in the state's east region.

The biggest recurring theme that we heard was the need for more technical assistance dollars!
