No employees? You might still need an EIN.

If your LLC has multiple members, you'll generally need one. Single-member LLCs without employees aren't always required to have an EIN for federal tax purposes, but many banks will ask for one when you open a business account.

You can apply for an EIN directly through the IRS for free. Yes, the IRS actually gives you something for free.

Northwest Registered Agent can also help you get your EIN when you're setting up your LLC, along with other formation essentials like your Operating Agreement.

For the business owners out there, did you get your EIN right away or wait until you actually needed one?

Your business might need a NAP.

Not the kind where you close your laptop and ignore your responsibilities for three hours. (Although, relatable.)

We're talking Name, Address, and Phone number.

Search engines use your business information to understand where you're located and when to show your business in local searches. If your website says one thing and your online listings say another, you could be making it harder for customers to find you.

Start by checking your website, Google Business Profile, and online directories for outdated information. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are accurate and consistent wherever they appear.

Northwest Registered Agent offers real street addresses at buildings we own that you can use on your website, marketing materials, and eligible state filings without putting your personal address out there. Just remember that platforms like Google Business Profile have their own address requirements, so your business address won't necessarily qualify as a customer-facing location.

A wrong address or outdated phone number might seem small, but it's a pretty big deal when someone's trying to give you their money.

Tag a business owner who could use a NAP! The business kind, although we're not judging if they need both.

We're choosing a Registered Agent, not collecting character development.

Before making a decision, there are four essential things you should consider first.

Privacy: Does the company sell your personal information to third parties?

Support: Who will actually answer your questions when you need help?

Pricing: Is that low price just an introductory offer? What will you pay next year?

Document delivery: How quickly will you be notified when important legal documents arrive?

At Northwest Registered Agent, we don't sell our customers' personal information, our Corporate Guides® are real people, and our Registered Agent service is $125/year. We also scan and upload important documents to your secure account the same day we receive them.

Your Registered Agent should not be the villain in your LLC's origin story.

Save this before choosing a Registered Agent! A few questions now could save you a lot of unnecessary character development later.

Unlike Billy, you don't have to sew our mouths shut to swear us to secrecy because privacy is already kinda our thing. 🤐🤫

With Northwest Registered Agent, real people at buildings we own receive your business mail. Choose Digital Mail Forwarding, and we'll open, scan, and send your mail straight to your secure online account, so you can see what's arrived without waiting for a physical delivery.

Rather keep your mail sealed? Physical Mail Forwarding sends it to you unopened, so you can open it yourself.

And when it comes to your personal information, we don't sell your data or share it with third parties for marketing purposes. No Hocus Pocus, just Privacy by Default®.

Which team are you: digital scans or mail delivered to your door?

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID IN YOUR LAST STATE.

And so might the Secretary of State.

Your LLC was doing great in its home state. Business was growing, opportunities were popping up, and expanding into another state seemed like the obvious next move.

But there's one little detail you might have overlooked.

Foreign qualification.

When your LLC starts doing business in another state, you may need to register there through a process called foreign qualification. This allows your existing LLC to legally conduct business in that state without forming an entirely new LLC.

Just having customers in another state doesn't automatically mean you need to register. But opening a physical office, having employees working there, or establishing ongoing operations can trigger the requirement. The rules vary by state.

And just because nobody's come knocking doesn't mean you're in the clear.

Skipping required registration can mean penalties, back fees, and restrictions on bringing lawsuits in that state.

Before your LLC becomes the subject of an investigation, here's what you'll generally need:

A foreign qualification application in the new state.

A Certificate of Good Standing (or equivalent) and/or certified copies of home-state filings, typically including the Articles of Organization and any subsequent amendments. Document requirements vary by state, and some states may require neither.

A Registered Agent with a physical address in the state where you're registering.

Before expanding, check what your new state considers "doing business" so you know whether registration is required.

Northwest Registered Agent can help you foreign qualify your existing LLC and provide Registered Agent service in all 50 states.

Because some business secrets have a way of coming back to haunt you.

When someone says we accept legal mail, but that's the least interesting thing about us.

Will your Registered Agent notify you if your business gets sued? Absolutely.

Your Registered Agent receives important business documents, including state notices and service of process, which is the formal delivery of legal paperwork notifying your business of a lawsuit.

When Northwest Registered Agent receives these documents on your behalf, we scan them to your secure online account and notify you as soon as they're available to view. That way, you can review what came in and take the appropriate next steps, especially when legal deadlines are involved.

Accepting legal mail isn't all we do. We can also help you set up your domain, get a business address, and keep up with state compliance requirements.

Your business got a match, and this one comes with money.

When you run your business remotely, getting paid by check can get a little complicated, especially when the check arrives at your business address while you're working from somewhere completely different.

With Digital Mail Forwarding from Northwest Registered Agent, real people receive your business mail, open it, scan the contents, and upload them to your secure online account. If a check arrives and you need the original to make your deposit, you can request to have it physically forwarded to you.

If you'd rather physically receive your mail on a regular schedule, Physical Mail Forwarding might be a better fit. We scan the outside of your envelopes so you know mail has arrived, then automatically forward your physical mail, including any checks inside, on a weekly basis.

You can choose whether to review your mail digitally and request individual items or have your physical mail forwarded automatically.

So, what piece of business mail are you swiping left on every single time? Tell us in the comments!

Congrats on starting your own business! You don't need a business partner to make it official.

A single-member LLC lets you own your business on your own while giving it a formal legal structure. Having an LLC can also help establish your business as a formal entity when you're working with customers, banks, and vendors.

It can also help protect your personal assets from business debts and lawsuits, although that protection isn't absolute.

Still weighing your options? Northwest Registered Agent has resources to help you compare business structures and understand what it takes to form an LLC. And when you're ready to file, we can help with that, too.

Solo founders, what kind of business are you building? Let us know in the comments!

Less than 90 days until 2027 sounds fake, but unfortunately the calendar has receipts. 😭😅

Before holiday shopping, end-of-year plans, and general December chaos take over, now’s a good time to give your LLC a little year-end attention.

Annual report requirements, deadlines, fees, and the records you need to keep current can vary depending on where your LLC is registered.

Our Corporate Guides® at Northwest Registered Agent can help you make sense of what your LLC actually needs to stay on top of as you head into the new year, from state filings to keeping your business records current.

Oh, and that Operating Agreement we keep pestering you about? Now’s a great time to dust it off and make sure it still reflects how your business actually operates.

Nothing says personal growth like knowing when your annual report is due. 😌 Save this for your year-end business reset!

Which list is looking scarier right now: your LLC checklist or your holiday shopping list?
