A patient comes into your clinic complaining of oral itching and swelling after eating a particular food, thinking that they may be allergic to it. However, this reaction might be a clue that they're allergic to something entirely different.

Oral Allergy Syndrome (or Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome) occurs when the immune system mistakes proteins in certain raw produce for pollen proteins it already recognizes as a threat. An example being that ragweed-allergic patients frequently react to melons, bananas, zucchinis, cucumbers, and sunflower seeds.*

For allergists and practice staff, an Oral Allergy Syndrome complaint is a practical prompt to evaluate pollen sensitization to check for potential cross-reactivity.

Summer travel and the scramble of back-to-school are potential reasons patients miss appointments, and immunotherapy is sensitive to gaps. According to survey data published by the AAAAI's Allergen Standardization and Allergy Diagnostics Committee, practitioners begin adjusting doses once a patient returns after missing an allergy immunotherapy maintenance dose.*

Right as patients are hoping that their allergies calm down after spring and early summer, they often notice their symptoms worsening as we enter late summer and early fall. This continuation of allergic symptoms are typically caused by a new trigger.

A single ragweed plant can produce roughly a billion pollen grains in one season, and each grain can travel miles away from where it originated. In most of the country, ragweed season starts around the beginning of August, peaks in mid-September, and continues on into the fall. Sagebrush, mugwort, and tumbleweed release pollen during this same window and can trigger similar reactions.*

It's important to remind patients as we shift into a new allergy season that they may not be experiencing the same reaction to the same trigger as they did in the spring. It might be time for them to consider getting tested for additional allergy triggers.

This past weekend, the Spokane community was ravaged by the Spokane Complex Fire, displacing thousands of people and resulting in the loss of over 700 structures. In these difficult times, coming together as a community and living our mission of helping others becomes important.

HollisterStier Allergy is proud of our deep roots, history, and legacy in Spokane and we deeply value our community. Our pride in our community only strengthens as we witness firsthand the ways people come together to support their neighbors, friends, and family.

We are still operational during this time. However, our focus remains with supporting our people directly affected by this tragedy, along with the Spokane community as a whole. Employees immediately started taking steps to ensure their coworkers have what they need through a donation drive collecting and distributing high-need items like toiletries, clothing, and food and water.
