Today, we wear orange to honor Native boarding school survivors and remember the children who never made it home.

Remembrance calls us to action. Learn the history, listen to survivors, share their stories, and support the continued work toward truth, healing, and justice.

We're excited to announce that Josephine Keefe (Nez Perce) has been appointed CEO of KAI, effective July 2, 2026. Josephine will continue serving as KAI's Vice President of Communications while leading the company into its next chapter.

Over the past 12 years, Josephine has helped shape KAI into the nationally recognized firm it is today. As Vice President of Communications, she has led our award-winning Communications service line while partnering across KAI's service lines and managing the company's largest federal project in outreach and engagement efforts to Tribal communities across the country. Her collaborative leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to our values will help build on KAI's strong foundation.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to strengthening our partnerships and continuing to do work that matters for Tribal Nations, our clients, and the communities we serve.

Every generation is shaped by leaders whose work creates opportunities for those who follow.

Today, we honor Jo Ann Kauffman (Nez Perce), founder and president of KAI, as she announces her retirement after 36 years of leadership and service.

Throughout her career, Jo Ann championed Native voices, strengthened partnerships, and advanced Native-led solutions across Indian Country.

We are deeply grateful for Jo Ann’s leadership, vision, and commitment to Native communities. As she begins this next chapter, we celebrate all she has contributed and wish her joy and fulfillment in the years ahead.

qe’ciyew’yew’. Thank you, Jo Ann, for showing us what it means to do work that matters.

Last week, KAI joined partners from across California in Sacramento for the Collective Action: Building Hope and Healing in California Indian Country All Grantee Gathering and California Indian Opioid Safety Coalition 20. Representatives from all 27 grantee sites attended the gathering.

The gathering created space for Wellbriety meetings, cultural activities, wisdom sharing, and conversations around prevention and Tribal Medication-Assisted Treatment. KAI is honored to highlight the important work grantees and partners are leading across the state to support healing, recovery, and community wellness.
