Northern Short-Tailed Shrews (Blarina brevicauda) are a very common non mouse rodent to find throughout Wisconsin. What makes these little, beefy rodents interesting is that the are actually one of very few mammals that are venomous in the world!
Though, primarily insectivores, they have been found eating other shrews and mice. Their venom is primarily used to subdue prey and it's generally thought to be strong enough to kill animals roughly their size. These shrews are definitely something you don't want to mess with bare handed! Even without their venom, they have incredibly long incisors. The venom delivery method is very similar to that of Gila Monsters and Beaded Lizards (Helodermatidae) in that they have grooves along their bottom incisors where the venom trickles into the wound.
Shrews can be problematic for the same reasons mice can in that they deficate often leading to unsanitary conditions, they can chew through bags of feed making the feed contaminated. Shrews are primarily solitary in nature except for reproduction purposes.
