Getting down and dirty with details, and how they came about, is job one with all my props. The passed few that have gone out, I deliberately started to give the chimney a jog or even a twist once it entered the attic space.

Odd is it may look, there are many older home’s especially balloon frames, that the chimney makes a jog to avoid the ridge. Many theory’s on this, but most point to a matter of design to work interior walls around the chimney, and not to create unused void spaces.

Korbling or stepping over unlined chimney’s were risky because of heat buildup at the angles, and jagged brick edges to trap creosote, causing damaging fires that penetrated the mortar joints. Instability, and collapse danger was always a possibility.

I have to give credit where credit is due, and the encouragement I received from a very special person, and highly regarded in the Fire Service. My friend Chief ( Ret.) Homer Robertson, Chief of training for the Ft Worth FD.

Chief Robertson came to me asking if I would be interested in selling the prop that I teach with, as there was a potential of many benefiting from it. Thought about it for awhile and sad “ Sure why not.” I was overwhelmed with orders, which I’m recently caught up after a good years worth of work.

Here are some pictures of FTFD builds including supplementary props as well. Greatly humbled.

Hello everyone, welcome to my building construction training aide page! A little background to introduce myself and how Flash Point Scale Structures LLC started.

With more than 45 years in the building trades as a carpenter and contractor, and a passion for fire service and all that it encompasses, I developed an educational program for firefighters to raise awareness of wood frame construction (past and present).

My visual learning program includes custom-made detailed scale models that demonstrate wood frame construction from foundation to ridgepole. While the models are a major part of the program, it also includes a presentation that focuses on building construction terminology and the ever-growing development of lightweight wood construction. The goal of this program is to raise awareness of how building construction can influence decision making on the fire ground.

My training program has attracted attention throughout the country and abroad and the uniqueness of program has also drawn interest in reproducing these models as teaching aides for other fire departments and institutions. Thus, the creation of Flash Point Scale Structures LLC. Each structure and/or prop is custom built to scale with many years of construction, modeling and firefighting experience.

My educational background includes an A.S. in Fire Science, PA State L&I journeyman carpenter, and a graduate of the Montgomery Country Fire Training Academy (PA). I've been a member of Station 7, Montgomery County since 1979, as well as a member of the NFPA and International Society of Fire Service Instructors.
