One of 2025’s various highlights was joining some longtime friends for my first return to Willow Flats since before the pandemic. I didn’t get a lot of pictures, but I did grab a few of our campfire while we cooked marshmallows and made s’mores.

It feels appropriate to start off 2026 with a sunrise shot. The skies didn’t have much to offer three years ago when I dragged out of my hotel room in Springdale, but luckily a little sunlight is all you need in a place like Zion.

When I walked out of the new Syracuse Temple a while back, I was tired, hungry, and it was almost a half hour until sunset. Plus I forgot my beanie, which isn’t smart when you shave your head and make a habit of hanging around outside in December. But I saw a little nativity set up out front, so I figured it would be worth sticking around until they turned the lights on.

Ogden’s downtown Christmas Village has become one of my favorite displays to photograph over the last few years. Last year I decided to stick with a simple handheld approach, which led to some fun impressionistic results.

The end of Fall Semester and the push to fill out my UFCA ballot have officially run headlong into the holiday event calendar, which doesn’t bode well for the pictures I’ve already taken that I still need to edit. Even so, I’m looking forward to getting out to photograph a few Christmas displays over the next few weeks. In the meantime, here’s a shot from Centerville in 2022.

On the way out of Colorado National Monument earlier this month, I caught this moonrise over Grand Junction. Though I’ve passed through the area before, this was my first time getting pictures, and I’m already looking forward to going back.

The morning before my sister and I were supposed to fly home from Chicago in July of last year, I walked over to the Bean for a quiet sunrise shoot. There was plenty of chaos ahead before we finally got home four days later, but at least for a while things felt nicely in sync.

Last June and I teamed up with for a tour of the Bisti Badlands in NW New Mexico. There are a few different areas to explore, but for our first visit we opted for the one that included the Alien Throne. It was a lot of fun getting to know Derrick and his wife; hopefully we can get back down there and see the rest of the region!

Up until last August my main association with Stansbury Island was getting sent home early from a scout camp when I was 12 for disruptive behavior. Then after finding out about the pink lake at its north end, and I drove out to the island before sunrise to get some pictures. Once again I am amazed at all the crazy places so close to my home, and embarrassed that it has taken so long to find out about them.

I didn’t stumble into any moose encounters this year, but I did find some great colors on a couple of leaf shoots this season. I usually see lots of yellows up in the canyons, but the oranges in this area really set the trees off.

This image from Many Glacier will always be one of my favorite shots from my 2019 visit to Glacier National Park, but it’s also a reminder of the importance of timing. Only moments after I took the picture, the disturbance in the water you can see gathering in the distance spread to my position, comprising the lake’s reflection quality. If I’d arrived a couple of minutes later I would have missed the shot. So this picture leaves me grateful for a few reasons…and thinking I’d love to go back and experience that area again.
