The most common sizing mistake for commercial energy systems isn't about the equipment, it's what the sizing was based on. A lot of systems get sized to match current energy use only, without accounting for planned growth — added equipment, building expansion, or an electrified vehicle fleet. Expanding later typically costs 20-30% more per watt than including that capacity in the original design, due to separate permitting and engineering. The other common miss: sizing battery storage around total daily usage alone, without factoring in demand charges — the cost driven by your single highest usage spike, not your total.

Most people look at the bottom-line total on their utility bill and stop there, but that number is made up of several pieces. There's the energy charge (per kWh used), delivery charges (distribution and transmission, which can add 30-50% on top of the base energy cost), and a flat customer charge — often $5-25 a month — that applies just for being connected, regardless of usage. Even at zero usage, that charge doesn't disappear. Understanding which piece is which explains why cutting usage in half rarely cuts the total bill in half too.

Weekend game: energy would-you-rather. Round one — leave one old incandescent bulb burning nonstop for a year, or run your AC three degrees cooler than needed for one summer? The AC wins easily. Round two — air-dry every load of laundry for a year, or skip your oven's self-cleaning cycle twice? The dryer habit adds up to far more. Energy use doesn't always match instinct — which answer surprised you? Miguel Callejas Powur

Comparing a standard electric water heater to a standard gas one, gas usually costs less to run — electricity generally costs more per unit of heat than natural gas, so a standard electric tank often runs a few hundred dollars more per year. But there's a third option worth knowing about: heat pump water heaters. Rather than generating heat directly, they move existing heat from the surrounding air into your water, using a fraction of the energy a standard electric tank needs — often cutting water heating costs by more than half. Worth asking about before assuming it's a straight electric-vs-gas choice.
