A lot of people have heard of the Better Business Bureau, but you might not know exactly what it is or why it matters.

The Better Business Bureau has been around for more than 100 years, helping consumers find information about businesses and promoting trust in the marketplace.

I've been involved with the Better Business Bureau through my business for over 20 years, and one thing that experience has taught me is that who you do business with matters.

BBB Accredited Businesses commit to standards like building trust, advertising honestly, telling the truth, being transparent, honoring promises, responding to customers, protecting privacy, and operating with integrity.

And I want to bring that same mindset into public service.

As I'm running for the DPSCD Board, one thing I want to explore is building stronger relationships with qualified local businesses, contractors, vendors, and community partners, including fellow BBB Accredited Businesses.

That doesn't mean somebody automatically gets a contract because they're with the BBB. You still have to follow district policies, procurement rules, bidding requirements, licensing requirements, and proper vetting.

But I believe we should be looking for businesses with documented track records and bringing more responsible local businesses to the table.

Whether we're talking about skilled trades, property services, mentoring, technology, workforce development, or other services, I want to help connect our schools with people who are serious about doing good business.

That's part of what I mean when I say Service Before Politics.

🏠🔨⚡ BUSY WEEKEND IN MOTION!

Quick stop at Home Depot with members of our skilled-trades team to grab materials for TWO different projects.

One property is an investor flip where our electrical team is completing a full rewire.

The second is a turnover being prepared for its pre-COC inspection, with work including garage scraping and painting, carpentry, repairs, and other final touch-ups.

This is what property services look like behind the scenes. Materials. Skilled trades. Coordination. Follow-through.

Sometimes we handle the work directly with members of our team. Other times, we help coordinate the project and make sure the necessary work gets completed.

🚨 DETROIT PROPERTY CHECK: THIS IS WHY YOU VERIFY THE WORK

This morning I’m back in Detroit conducting a scope-of-work inspection on a property for a client, and unfortunately, what I walked into does not look good.

A significant amount of the expected work is still incomplete. Demolition debris has been stored in the garage instead of being properly removed, and the overall condition of the project does not reflect where it should be based on the money already spent.

The client started with an estimated rehabilitation budget, and now the project is already over budget with work still remaining.

This is exactly why property owners and investors need someone checking the job throughout the process.

✔️ Verify completed work
✔️ Compare progress to the scope
✔️ Track the rehabilitation budget
✔️ Document unfinished items
✔️ Hold contractors accountable
✔️ Catch problems BEFORE more money goes out

I hate seeing clients get into situations like this. Once a project gets behind financially and physically, getting it back under control becomes much harder.

Today, we document everything, determine what still needs to be completed, and figure out the best path forward.

This is more than looking at a property. It’s protecting the client’s investment.
