Proper Mulching
As I drive around SW Missouri, I see all types of mulching techniques that are very interesting. Some are spot on and some are just plain wrong and wasteful. In the first picture, this is considered volcano mulching. You will see this done around this area quite frequently. Not only is this wrong but volcano mulching harms trees and wastes mulch by piling it up to the trunk of a tree where moisture can and will cause rot. Wrong on many levels!
On the other hand, the second image shows the correct way to mulch a tree. This tree has been given space around the roots to allow for proper growth and expansion of the tree over time. Since the mulch is not piled up against the trunk in a mound, there is no room for moisture to creep in and cause rot.
Mulching is crucial in keeping your landscape healthy and strong. Doing it the right way will help keep your landscape free from disease and other problems that could be costly for you in the future.
