HR893 & SR787 designates May 2026 as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or EDS, is an inherited condition that affects the body’s connective tissue. Your connective tissues help support skin, joints, blood vessels, internal organs, and bones. Because of this, EDS can affect and is much more than just “flexible joints or stretchy skin”.

People with EDS may experience joint instability, frequent dislocations or subluxations, chronic pain, easy bruising, digestive issues, dizziness, rapid heart rate when standing, and complications involving internal organs. Many individuals with EDS also experience Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). which can cause lightheadedness, fatigue, heart palpitations, and other serious symptoms.

With common debate on when the diagnosis truly moves from one to another, it is estimated that Hyper-mobile Spectrum Disorder and EDS affect at least 1 in 500 people, and is still believed to be under-diagnosed. There is currently no known cure, which makes awareness, early diagnosis, better medical understanding, and continued research extremely important.

This resolution recognizes those living with EDS, raises awareness, and encourages more research and support for individuals and families affected by this condition

This week, J&J Legislative lobbyist, Jensen Ross, testified in House Labor Committee on behalf of AAUW Illinois, Inc. in support of HR727 along with House Sponsor, State Representative Mary Beth Canty. We are happy to report this was passed out of committee is now on the House Floor.
