There is a small town in the North Carolina mountains that almost nobody outside it has heard of, and if it stopped working tomorrow the entire modern world would notice inside of a year. ✨

Spruce Pine sits in Mitchell County, in a pocket of the Blue Ridge where a very strange thing happened underground a few hundred million years ago. The rock there cooled slowly enough, and cleanly enough, to grow enormous crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica in a purity that is close to unheard of anywhere else on earth.

For a long time it was the mica that mattered. Muscovite mica splits into sheets so thin you can see through them and so heat resistant they will not burn, and mountain families mined it and split it by hand. Women sat at long benches with thin knives, peeling a rough block apart layer by layer like the pages of a book, trimming and grading each sheet by size. It went into stove doors and lamp chimneys first. Then it went into radio capacitors, aircraft ignition systems and military electronics, and during the Second World War the government came to those hollows and bought every ounce Mitchell County could produce. 🏔️

These were people working for hourly wages in board sheds with the wind coming through the walls, glittering head to foot with mineral dust at the end of every shift, and the thing they were splitting was going into equipment that decided how the war went.

Then came the part that outlasted the mica. That same district turned out to hold the purest natural quartz on the planet, and ultra pure quartz is what you make the crucibles from that molten silicon is spun in. Which means the chip in the phone in your hand very likely began as sand dug out of a mountain in western North Carolina.

Hurricane Helene tore through that county in 2024 and shut the operations down, and the whole global semiconductor industry held its breath until they came back on.

One small mountain town. Everybody depends on it. Almost nobody knows its name. 🤎
