Contrary to popular belief, the Illuminati was not the same thing as Freemasonry. Dr. Weishaupt was a Freemason, but was simply inspired by the Freemasons' use of the Rites of Eleusis, an initiatory system of degrees utilized first by the ancient Greeks, then later adopted by Freemasonry. The main focus of each individual utilizing this initiation system, varied from person to person, and was often centered around Science, and Philosophy. Whereas, with Freemasonry, the same Rites are performed for the benefit of what they deemed "The Great Work", which often focused on charity, and the improvement of the Will of the "Grand Architect" or whatever name you call God, the Creator. The Catholic Church banned both the Illuminati, as well as Freemasonry in 1783 by Papal decree. There was not enough time in its inception, to banishment, for it to reach the then newly formed United States. So, the "connection" between the Illuminati, and Freemasonry in the USA today is non-existent.
