Last night, our crews were called to investigate a haze and odor of smoke in the area after a resident blocks away reported the conditions. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a rubbish pile still burning. The homeowner had been burning books, believed the fire was extinguished, and went to bed.

Burning trash is illegal in Maryland Heights, and incidents like this are a good reminder of why. Smoke from burning household materials can contain harmful chemicals, and lingering embers can ignite nearby vegetation or other combustible materials.

The takeaway: Just because the flames are gone doesn’t mean the fire is out. Recreational fires must be contained within a commercially manufactured fire pit and should never be left unattended. When finished, use plenty of water, stir the ashes, and repeat until everything is completely cool.

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, we want to thank our local schools for welcoming us into their classrooms.

Throughout the week, crews from each of our three shifts made their rounds to area schools, providing fire safety presentations and giving students an up close look at our fire trucks.

This year’s theme focused on charging safety. One important reminder: Always charge devices on a hard, flat surface and use chargers approved by the manufacturer.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our students and help them build safe habits that extend beyond the classroom!

Yesterday, our off-duty personnel joined several area agencies for a softball tournament hosted by SEMS. The beautiful weather and some great competition made for a fun day on the field.

Our team battled its way to the championship game, ultimately falling short against Black Jack Fire Protection District.

Thanks to SEMS for putting together a great event and to everyone who participated!

As we begin Fire Prevention Week, this year’s theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety.”

Throughout the week, our Firefighter/Paramedics will be making their rounds at local schools, teaching students about safe charging habits and simple steps they can take to help prevent lithium ion battery fires.

It’s a great opportunity to start these conversations early and help students bring important fire safety lessons home to their families.
