Patient concerns over ever-increasing costs are growing, especially when it comes to their health care. Morning Consult recently conducted a 50-state poll to collect data focusing on health care cost and affordability challenges, and the responses tell us a lot about what adults across the country believe policymakers should do to tackle these problems.

Among the findings, 88% of Americans across all 50 states agree that policymakers should prioritize lowering their out-of-pocket health care costs. When given two options, over 50% of those surveyed would rather see the out-of-pocket costs decrease rather than pay a lower monthly premium. Specifically, when it comes to actual solutions to lower out-of-pocket costs, 77% of those surveyed favor requiring health insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to share the savings they receive directly with patients at the pharmacy counter. An example of why there must be total transparency on drug pricing. A program intended to help indigent patients instead becomes a profit mule for hospitals. This type of outrage needs to stop.

The 340B program was created to help vulnerable patients access medicines at safety-net hospitals and clinics. Unfortunately, the program has become largely unrecognizable as profit incentives have fueled rapid program expansion, often at the expense of patients’ wellbeing. For instance, despite receiving generous discounts from manufacturers on outpatient medicines, sometimes bringing down the price to just a penny, 340B hospitals turn around and mark-up prices for patients and insurers, often up to nearly 3.8x what they paid to acquire the medicine. How does that benefit patients? Learn more: https://onphr.ma/3oxUdUi

The quality of health care you receive depends not solely on how much doctors are paid, but how that pay is determined. Is it according to volume, or quality?

Value-based care is part of the healthcare vernacular. Yet, 9% of health expenditures involve alternative payment methodologies. That needs to change.
