As Scope 3 emissions reporting becomes more common across manufacturing, the upstream footprint of raw material sourcing is getting more attention.

Primary metal production carries significant embedded carbon. Recycled feedstock carries considerably less. For companies purchasing steel, aluminum, or copper as production inputs, material sourcing decisions can have a real impact on reported Scope 3 figures.

Reliable supply and processing quality are prerequisites for recycled material to be a workable alternative. Traceability is increasingly important as reporting requirements tighten.

This week, members of our Safety team proudly attended the Midwest Women in Safety Conference at Kirkwood Community College , connecting with safety professionals and industry leaders from across the region.

Senior Manager of Workers Comp and DOT Krista Grau (pictured left) and Miranda Zuroske, EHS Coordinator (right) attended sessions focused on leadership, workplace safety, mental health, hazard recognition, and creating more inclusive work environments. A few things worth watching as Q4 gets underway.

Construction activity typically slows in the northern US through November and into winter, which can soften ferrous demand in the near term. Mill order books heading into year end vary considerably though, and strong backlogs can offset that seasonal pattern.

In non-ferrous markets, copper and aluminum respond to a different set of drivers: energy costs, global construction and electronics demand, and currency movements. Q4 often brings adjustments as industrial buyers close out annual contracts, and it's worth distinguishing those positioning moves from underlying demand signals.

The global trade environment continues to affect commodity flows in ways that aren't always predictable. Tariff structures and currency shifts can move domestic scrap prices independent of local supply and demand.

For manufacturers with emissions reduction targets, recycled metal feedstock is one of the more straightforward levers available.

The figures are well established. Recycling steel uses roughly 74% less energy than producing it from iron ore. Recycled aluminum requires about 95% less energy than primary production. Recycled copper reduces carbon emissions by approximately 65% compared to mined and processed material.

Beyond the environmental metrics, domestic scrap supply is generally less exposed to the international logistics disruptions and extraction bottlenecks that affect primary metal markets. In periods of global supply volatility, a well-connected scrap supply chain offers meaningful stability.

Today is National Manufacturing Day.

Electric arc furnace steelmaking, which now accounts for the majority of US steel production, runs almost entirely on scrap. Recycled aluminum and copper play similar roles in reducing both production costs and energy consumption across the manufacturing sector.

The recycling industry and the manufacturing industry aren't parallel supply chains. They're the same one.

Alter Trading Corporation has been processing and supplying scrap to mills and manufacturers since 1898. Today we recognize everyone in manufacturing keeping that chain moving.

50 new gondola railcars are now part of the Alter Trading fleet—strengthening our transportation network and supporting the movement of recycled metal back into steelmaking.

Built by The Greenbrier Companies using SSAB Zero™ steel, these railcars represent more than an investment in transportation capacity. They are a tangible example of the circular economy in action.

The recycled steel used to produce the SSAB Zero™ steel for these railcars came from high-quality recycled metal processed by Alter Trading. SSAB transformed that recycled metal into SSAB Zero™ steel, and Greenbrier used it to manufacture the railcars that will now help Alter move more recycled metal to steel producers.

Recycled by Alter. Transformed by SSAB. Manufactured by Greenbrier. Back in service with Alter.

That’s the circular economy in action—and a powerful example of what’s possible when recycling, steelmaking and manufacturing come together.

Alter Trading and Flynn Park Elementary in the School District of University City are officially on a MISSION! 🎯

We just had our Million Cans Recycling Contest kickoff assembly, and our students once again took the Million Cans Pledge! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ 🦁

They’re ready to collect cans.

They’re ready to recycle.

They’re ready to make a difference.

And they’re REALLY ready to compete! 😎

Last year, Flynn Park collected a whopping 100,940 cans and finished #1 in Missouri!

But this year? We’re going for #1 in the WHOLE COUNTRY!

The Million Cans Recycling Contest kicks off October 1, and every aluminum can counts. This year, 72 schools across 19 states will compete to recycle the most aluminum cans.

So how can you help?
