As businesses grow and bring on additional help, how that help is classified matters more than many owners realize.

Misclassifying an employee as an independent contractor is one of the more common compliance issues small businesses face. The distinction affects payroll taxes, benefits obligations and how compensation is reported to the IRS, and the IRS looks at the nature of the working relationship rather than just the title or the contract.

If you are unsure whether someone should be on payroll or working as a contractor, getting clarity on that sooner rather than later tends to be the more straightforward path.

For small business owners, retirement accounts serve two purposes: building long-term financial security and reducing taxable income in the current year.

For 2026, contribution limits for SEP IRAs and Solo 401(k)s go up to $70,000 depending on your situation. September is a good time to review where you stand and whether there is room to contribute more before year-end.

If you have questions about which retirement account structure makes the most sense for your business, we are glad to walk through the options with you.

For businesses planning significant equipment or asset purchases before December 31, the timing of those decisions matters more than usual this year.

100% bonus depreciation is restored for 2026, meaning businesses can immediately deduct the full cost of qualified equipment placed in service during the year rather than depreciating it over time. The Section 179 expensing limit has also increased to $2.5 million.

If a purchase is already under consideration, understanding how it affects your 2026 tax position is worth factoring into that decision.

By the time November arrives, some of the most useful tax planning options for the year are no longer available. September is generally a better starting point.

At this point in the year, you have enough data to know roughly where your income will land and enough time to act on what you find. A conversation with your advisor now tends to produce better outcomes than one in December.

If you want to take a closer look at where your 2026 tax position stands, we are glad to help.

The third quarter estimated tax payment deadline is September 15.

If your income has shifted since you last reviewed your estimates, now is a good time to make sure your payment reflects where the year is actually heading. Underpaying can trigger penalties on top of what you owe at filing, and overpaying ties up cash your business could be using in the meantime.

If you have questions about what you owe for Q3, we are glad to help you work through it before the deadline.

Tax season is easier and less expensive for business owners who stay organized throughout the year.

A few habits that make a real difference: reconciling your accounts monthly rather than quarterly, keeping business and personal expenses clearly separated and holding on to documentation for any expense you plan to deduct. Small gaps in recordkeeping have a way of becoming larger problems when it comes time to file.

If your books are not where you want them to be heading into Q4, there is still time to get organized. We can help.

The Q3 estimated tax payment deadline is September 15.

If your income has been higher than expected this year, your payment may need to be adjusted upward. If business has been slower, there may be room to recalibrate. Either way, defaulting to last quarter's number without a quick review can lead to an underpayment penalty — or unnecessary overpayment.

It is worth a look before the deadline arrives. We are glad to help you work through it.
