Saint Louis University Speedfest Design Team We are a student team that will design, test, build, and fly a jet propulsion aircraft that will meet specific requirements and compete at Speedfest.

Right after landing, we started up the engine again and went for another attempt. This time we flew a few laps, and when the battery was getting low Ken brought it down. He didn't have and control on the ground steering, and it ended up rolling off the runway. There was a little bit of damage around the nose, but nothing we can't fix. Overall, a very successful (and long) day!

After failing to takeoff twice, we finally got it on the third try! We didn't have ground steering in the nose gear, but our pilot made it work!

Our engine cut off mid-flight, but Ken was able to land safely. As our competition did require our plane to glide, we are actually happy that we got to see this happen, as we weren't planning on trying to shut off our engine and glide this day.

Hello everyone! We wanted to give you an update on the team and our future goals. To start out: last week, our competition has officially been cancelled. We were prepared to receive this news, but it hurt nonetheless. There is a possible "fun flight" day that'll be scheduled when this pandemic passes over, but that's very up in the air right now.

Still, we were determined to fly this plane, and refused to just quit the build portion of this project. We were finally able to finish up our first build and flight test earlier this week. Here are a few photos from before and after the flight. The videos will be posted separately (right after this post).

Our first plane, Plant, named after one of our patrons (Christopher Plant), flew spectacularly! We had to cut through a lot of corners; it didn't look as pretty as we wanted it to, and we were unable to fully complete a competition ready plane, but we did what we could given the circumstance, and we are very proud of this. Our pilot, Ken, and the other gentlemen at the flight field helped us with last minute tweaks to prepare for flight. Ken did an amazing job, and our baby ended up in one piece (only suffered a little damage around the nose). Good thing too, because we "forgot" to bring the trash bag.

Moving on with our class, our team has decided to attempt to fix up our plane, make a few improvements, and fly again before the semester ends, as most of us are already located in St. Louis. We will do our best to continue to work in a safe manner, respecting and acknowledging the seriousness of this current crisis. We will be paying close attention to updates on this situation, and will act accordingly. But fingers crossed, we can do this again!

Thank you for your support and interest in our project. There are many things to be sad and disappointed about, but here's to hard work paying off! =)

~Bobby

Next we have Ignacio!
Ignacio is in charge of Stability and Control, along with being the media coordinator and treasurer. He is originally from Seville, Spain, and has also lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Ignacio is the president of the Club Rugby team at SLU and was one of the founding members of SHPE-SLU. Ignacio's love for aerospace came from all the traveling he had to do in overseas to go back to Spain, when he was young he would catch himself watching airplanes take-off and land. His passions include rooting for his hometown soccer team Sevilla FC and the St. Louis Blues and Cardinals. After graduation, he plans to enter the business development field, putting the critical thinking he has learned in engineering to good use.

It has been awhile since our last post but today we are going to introduce you to Josh!

Josh is in charge of Flight Control's and will be on the flight line with our pilot. Josh was born locally in the Greater St. Louis area from Fenton, where he attended Rockwood Summit High school. A couple fun facts about him is that he is a Diehard Blues fan and can play several different instruments. Here on campus, Josh is involved as an active member in ADG national fraternity, a member of the local AIAA chapter, and the former lead flight controls technician for SLUAV drone club. Upon graduation in the spring, Josh plans to get his feet wet in the industry as his dream is to be a Flight Test Engineer.

In the next few weeks, we will be posting bios and pictures so you can all meet our team!
Bobby is our team lead and project manager. Some interesting facts about him are: he's a competitive powerlifter, an avid film enthusiast, and genuinely enjoys learning. Bobby went to Mizzou right after high school for his 2014-2015 school year but withdrew afterward because he was unsure of what he wanted to pursue. After a couple of years of working full time, he met a SLU alum who told him about how he worked at a factory for several years, decided he wanted to do something else, and got an aerospace engineering degree at SLU and now works for Boeing. Bobby decided to pursue his interest in aerospace and started at STLCC that Fall, and now he's in his second and last year at SLU. Bobby is looking to join the aerospace field after graduation.
