Lots 1 to 12 bring together sculptural baskets and woven forms from The Sam and Marilyn Fox Collection, St. Louis. Lissa Hunter earned an MFA in fibers and developed her own method of layering paper onto coiled baskets. Gary Trentham made his first basket as a graduate student, then received an NEA grant that let him devote his time to the work. Michael Davis’s spiked basket, dated 1988, looks like a sea urchin.

Ed Rossbach, John Garrett, Carol Eckert, Lillian Elliott, Katherine Westphal, and JoAnne Russo round out a group where wire, linen, quills, paper, and found objects all become the medium.

Save the ones you love, and tell us which one stopped your scroll.

The Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt never saw the book he commissioned. He died in 1612, a year before Hortus Eystettensis was published.

Nuremberg apothecary Basilius Besler curated the bishop’s garden, then created the florilegium that recorded it: 367 plates, more than 1,000 plants. Twelve hand-colored engravings (Lot 261-263) from the Sam and Marilyn Fox Collection, offered in three lots of four, will be available in our upcoming Eclectic Collections sale.

In 1906, Edward S. Curtis (American, 1868-1952) asked J.P. Morgan to fund a project to publish a multi-volume set of books about Native Peoples. Originally proposed to take five years to complete, it wasn’t until 24 years later that the last volume was completed, in 1930.

The North American Indian is comprised of twenty individually bound books, more than 2,200 photos taken by Curtis and nearly 5,000 pages of text, representing more than one hundred Native Nations and Tribes. It has been considered “the most exquisite art book of our time.”

Thirteen plates (Lots 1–13) from that project come to Eclectic Collections, alongside three additional Curtis’ works.

In 1954, Lee and Pup McCarty came home to Merigold, Mississippi, and turned an old mule barn into a working pottery studio. What started there grew into one of the Mississippi Delta’s enduring names in studio pottery: signature glazes in nutmeg brown, cobalt blue, and jade, with most pieces marked by a wavy black line for the river running just west of town.

We are proud to offer thirteen lots (Lots 347 - 359) of McCarty Studio Art Pottery in our Eclectic Collections sale, among them a lamp standard mounted on its original base and a rare cylindrical lidded jar. Every piece is signed and carries that distinctive river mark: a small signature of a big Delta legacy.
