👑 Quality Queen Tip of the Day! 👑 Did you know that according to the CAP checklist, all specimens, regardless of their size, need to be fixed in formalin for a minimum of 6 hours up to 72 hours? While it's true that basic fixation occurs at a rate of about one hour per millimeter, the essential process of cross-linking takes extra time. This is especially crucial for breast specimens to ensure proper results. Don't rush the process! Give your specimens the full 6 to 72 hours they need for proper fixation.

Waiting for biopsy results can feel like forever, but a longer wait doesn’t automatically mean bad news. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes before a diagnosis reaches you. Tissue has to be carefully processed, prepared, stained, and reviewed, and sometimes additional testing or evaluation is needed. Lab volume can also affect turnaround times. Julie explains why the process can take time and why waiting longer for results isn’t an indication of what those results will be.

Love histology but struggling with sensitivity to formalin? That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to leave the field you love. There are other career paths within histology that may offer less exposure to formalin, including immunohistochemistry, quality control and assurance, and laboratory safety roles. Julie shares a few options to consider if you’re looking for a change while still putting your histology knowledge and experience to work. Sometimes it’s not about leaving the field, it’s about finding a different place within it.

Quality Queen tip of the day! Are you testing and documenting the pH of your formalin correctly? Julie breaks down what labs need to know when it comes to formalin and CAP requirements. If you’re making your own formalin, the pH needs to be tested each time. If you’re purchasing it, make sure you have the proper documentation from the manufacturer. And remember, outside factors like changes in weather can affect pH levels, so when in doubt, check it yourself and document it.

Remember playing the “cloud game” as a kid? You’d look up at the sky and suddenly see a dog, a face, or some random shape in the clouds. Turns out, histology has its own version! Sometimes after a specimen goes through staining, you look at the slide and can’t help but see something familiar staring back at you. Let's get everyone in on the game!
