It's a great feeling sitting here this morning having coffee, watching our finals guests of the season packing up to head home after a phenomenal week of moose hunting here at SHC!
Monday started off slow for 2 out of the 3 groups, with only guide Steve able to show his zone 10 hunters a good bull, but no shots were fired.
Tuesday morning dawned crisp and cold, with expectations very high. I brought longtime bear client and friend JT from Texas and his son Brady into a fresh zone 10 cut I had scouted last week a half hour before daybreak, and once legal time was upon us we stalked our way up the grassy road that led thru the cut, calling as we went. After a half hour with no response, we changed gears and decided to attack the cut from the South, where both the wind, and visibility would be more beneficial. It wasn't long before we spotted a young bull about 90 yards out, and quickly decided to pass on him. We slowly worked our way east , and about 35 minutes later we stopped and I did another series of calls. We instantly heard a bull answer, followed by a few branches breaking, and I got JT ready on the sticks. Within seconds another young bull came trotting in ,stopping broadside just 25 yards from us. He was about 30" wide, with small palms. I whispered to JT that I thought we could do better, that it was only Tuesday, and that I didn't want him to shoot. We had a comical exchange of words, to which the young bull decided he'd had enough of, and turned to leave, going back out the skidder trail he had come in on. As I watched him disappear in my binoculars through a few openings in the fir boughs of the trees between us, I saw palms of a much bigger bull coming towards us, obviously looking for the " cow" ( our call). I told JT to get ready, and when the bull stepped out I said " kill him when you can" and the shooting started! JT fired twice, while Brady joined and threw 2 in for good measure, and the bull went down less than 25 yards from where it started! 46" Spread and 657 lbs. Congratulations JT and Brady ! We called back to the lodge and Russell came in with all the recovery gear to help us get it loaded up and out of the woods!
Later on Tuesday afternoon,Steve took clients Frank,Ron,and Jim from PA into a spot he had scouted and had several bulls on camera. They were not there long when they spotted some cows feeding their way into the cut, and not far behind them was a real nice bull. Steve got Frank set up on the sticks, and they had to wait for the bull to get clear of the cows. When the time was right, Steve gave the go ahead, but Frank paused a bit, waiting for what he thought was a better shot. This has bitten them 3 times already in the past day and half on a different bull, and now it was about to happen again! As the bull was getting ready to mount the cow that stood in front of him Steve literally hollered" Frank ,you have to shoot, now, or he's gonna mount her!!!" and with that , Frank let the led fly! Ron jumped into action as well, and within seconds the big bull was on the ground, and his harem of cows soon left the area as the guys went down to get their hands on their moose! Congratulations to Frank,Ron,Jim,and Steve! Russell and I brought the gear down and we all teamed up on the somewhat tricky extraction, but we were able to bring the moose out whole.
Despite lots of preseason scouting, and having some good bulls located prior to the hunting week,Donnie and his zone 5 clients Scott and Drew were having a tough go of it. They had called in some moose right at last light on Tuesday evening, but were not able to see them well enough get a good shot. I was able to get out Wednesday afternoon to try and help out, and I hiked into a secret spot at last light that I just hadn't been into yet this Fall. I was pleased with all the sign I found, and had decided I definitely wanted to encourage to them to hunt it on Thursday. I stood around for a few minutes, and just as I was leaving I looked back to see a young bull about 300 yards out. I snuck out of there without disturbing him, knowing he wouldn't likely be far away the next day.
On Thursday morning we decided to try a plan Steve had, to check a bunch of spots at daybreak, in an area that had a high moose concentration. We spent about 3 hours hunting our way around there, before deciding to head over to where I'd seen the bull the night before. We hiked the 1/4 mile down the winter road into the cut and got set up, both Donnie and Steve really liking the area. My plan all along had been to leave about 12:30, as I had to cape out the other 2 hides back at camp and get them in the freezers. After an hour of calling with no response, I said" I'm gonna quietly ease outta here ,good luck to you guys" and off I went to my truck. I was pretty confident they would get it done in there. I hadn't been back to the lodge long before Russell came over and backed up to the 4 wheeler trailer. I asked what he was doing and he said " Dad called, they got a bull"! I realized I'd left my phone in my cabin, and had missed the call. Russell and I headed up with the gear to help with getting it out. When we arrived they filled us in on the details. Donnie said they decided after I left they were hungry, and walked out to the truck to get lunch and eat. They ate quickly and headed back down in, not wanting to miss any potential moose. Wanting a little better cover, and a more comfortable seat, they found a spot on the treeline, about 50 yards south of where we had sat a couple hours earlier. Donnie did a series of calls lasting about a minute, looked up, and there stood a young bull about 60 yards in front of them! He already had Scott at the ready, so once the cross hairs found their mark, the shooting began, and the young bull hit the dirt! Congratulations to Scott and Donnie on a job well done!

I want to thank each and every person, from the clients, to the guides, and Karen, the cook, for the hard work, and great memories that were made in camp and in the woods this week. It was a great moose hunt!

Well, Saturday brought a close to our 2025 Fall Bear season. The last 3 weeks were an absolute blur, and I'm gonna do my best to recap the adventures the best I can, so here goes....
Week #4 is a combo week, we have bait hunters in camp and we also start hound hunting. On Monday we went straight to a bait where I had a picture of a big bear about 5 hours earlier and we put dogs down at first light. After a bit of time, Jasper finally got it figured out and trailed it out Southeast. He got into Carleton Brook Swamp before we could get help to him, and with no roads to access it, he spent around 3 hours walking the big bear around the swamp before Marty committed to walking about 1.5 miles thru some nasty terrain to cut Misty and Timber in. Chris and I got around by truck to the other side with navigational help from Amber and Teresa, and we were able to get Brutus, Macey, and Diesel in. All that extra heat made the big bear climb, and we made the 1 mile hike into the tree with client/ friend Paul from Texas grinning all the way. A couple shots brought the 425 lb. bruin to the ground, and Paul had his first trophy Maine bear!
While this was happening, we got word from Donnie and Tick that they had got their hunter Jordan a nice bear. They started the bear off LRD bait with Karma and Oscar and it trailed towards RT2. Once it was up and running, it crossed the blacktop and they packed in Taz, Molly, Clyde, and Pepper. After about 2 miles, the 208 lb. boar took refuge in a big pine, before Jordan brought the hunt to end with his 20 gauge slug gun!
On Wednesday, Donnie and Tick were out with client Heather and found a big bear had hit 2 mile brook bait overnight. They started the track with Karma and Oscar, and it wasn't long before the big bear was up and running, headed for Rt.2. As the dogs got close to the pavement, Heather took charge of the road( note she is a NJ police officer😃) and literally stopped logging trucks! The bear decided not to cross, however, and chose to go back West away from the road and tree just 400 yds in! Heather made a great shot, and the massive animal crashed to the ground! Back at the lodge he pulled the scale to a whopping 496 lbs.! ,making it the 2nd largest bear we have ever harvested! Congratulations Heather! Later that evening, bait hunter Gary from PA shot a nice boar over bait on Rockabema Ridge, weighing in at 187 lbs.
On Thursday it was longtime client/ friend John from PA up to bat, and it didn't take long. We found a good one on little fir bait, and Tick let Karma and Oscar get things started before loading up the big sow as she got close to the gravel road we were waiting on. She treed about 300 yards later, and John's shot sent her into a nosedive towards the ground . The beautiful dry sow weighed in at 235lbs.! Congrats to John on his 4th bear in 6 trips!
Saturday Marty,Chris and I took bait hunter Kevin on a bonus hound hunt and we rigged a track between sites. With no pressure to perform, we decided to try it. They went backwards at first, but once we got them pointed right, Josie and Brutus went and got the bear jumped up, running, and treed. Kevin made good on his opportunity, and was rewarded with a 191 lb boar!
Donnie and Tick were taking bait hunter and long time client/ friend Craig on a bonus hound hunt at the same time. They got on a nice boar, and he went on a long stroll, walking and baying for a couple hours before they could get set up on a road crossing and get some bullets into him. The bruin weighed 251 lbs, and was Craig's 3rd Maine bear. Congratulations Craig! Later that evening, being the last night over bait, Teresa finally got a chance to sit, and she made it count when a nice bear walked in with just 6 minutes of legal time left. The beautiful dry sow weighed 148lbs and was her 8th bear!

Week #5 changes over to just hounds, and is usually a little easier,....unless the guys have heard about the big bears from the week earlier and want to hold out for big uns! 🤦 Needless to say the first couple days were slow going, but on day 3 we headed North to a bait that head a real nice bear on it at 4:30 am. Tick and I were teamed up for the remainder of the season, and once at the bait we sent Karma, Oscar, and Jasper in. The three of them made short work of it, and had the bear treed in about 25 minutes about 1.5 miles away. We parked in a clear-cut, and as we started up the edge we could see the bear sitting in a big pine about 300 yards out! Mr. Mike from NJ made a perfect shot and the bear took just a few steps after hitting the ground before toppling over. The big sow weighed 275 lbs! Congratulations Mike!
The next day Donnie and Mark Dufresne headed for a big bear I had a pic of on Pickett bait and he sent Lilly and Mando in to do the work. They went straight up the hill, similar to the day before, but pushed on further, getting the bear jumped up before reinforcements helped make it climb high in the notch of a big maple about 40' up. Donnie got the hunter Josh in position, and one well placed head shot anchored the bear, literally! It stayed stuck in the notch for a few hours while they tried every which way to get it free, before hiring a local tree climber to get it out! The big boar weighed 348 lbs!
Meanwhile, Tick and I had found a good one for our hunter Lincoln on Carver bait and Oscar, Jasper, and Karma headed out of the bait site barking steady, heading towards Wadleigh dead water. Once they had things up and running we were able to get around and put Taz,Clyde, and John Wick in for help. Things slowed down to a walk and bay for the next hour or so, and we were able to get Lincoln in position ahead of the bear as he came towards us. At about 10 yards he put a great shot on the bruin ,and the 302 lb boar came to rest! Congratulations Lincoln!
The final client for that week was Mark from NJ, and on Friday morning while having coffee I got a pic of a "new" bear on one of my baits that I hadn't seen before. I showed Mark, and estimated him around 275. He said let's do it so off we went, kinda of a tag team with Tick and Mark's dogs. Lilly and Gecko trailed out of the bait site very well , and it didn't take long before we were off and running. After a couple road crossings, Mark put in a couple more dogs and the baying began! A couple attempts to get hunter Mark in came up short as the bear winded them and moved, and then started walking. We were able to get Taz,Clyde, and Josie in at different times, and Mark was able to get a couple shots at it crossing the roads, with no luck hitting it. Finally, about 10 hours into the marathon, as time was beginning to become a real issue, Donnie was able to get Mark in close enough for a shot, and the massive bear hit the ground. At Wilderness Variety the official scale read 456lbs. That day was a true group effort if I've ever seen one! Congratulations Mark! My Dad got to tag along for the day and that made the hunt extra special.
Over the past couple years, our cook Karen has expressed a lot of interest in shooting a bear, and we just haven't been able to give her the opportunity ( she works a lot of hours keeping us all fed so well!) With all the clients tagged out on Friday, Saturday would be her chance, and she rose to the challenge. She showed up to the lodge at 4:30 a.m. with her Dad's .32 Wi******er Special ready to go, and I had a pic of a bear in Rockabema that we thought would be a perfect fit. She really was hoping for a treed bear, as she was a little unsure about shooting at a moving bear, especially near the dogs. We loaded up and headed out, and my truck decided that was the one day this season not to shift properly ( bad output shaft sensor).
We did a roadside dog box change into my other truck and sent Karen off with Donnie,Tick,Mark ,and Russel.
Tick put the dogs out and John Wick got things figured out with the rest of them hot on his heels. The young boar refused to tree, much to Karen's dismay, but Mark and the guys coached her up good and she made a great shot when the dogs brought the bear across a big gravel road. Our friend was all smiles when she got her hands on the 143 lb.bear! Congratulations Karen!

Week #6 was much the same, with the hunters holding out the first day for bigger bears. On Tuesday Donnie and Mark found a good bear for client Brian, and Lilly and Mando made short work of it treeing it off Moose loop Rd. Brian did a great job shooting and was rewarded with a nice 167lb. bear, his 2nd bear with us !
On Wednesday Russell called on the radio saying he had a big one at the Y bait. Tick ,Teresa ,and I headed over there, and we put Jasper and Taz down to try and grub out the 8.5 hour old track. It was slow going at first, but after about a half hour, they had the bear up on his feet, and coming towards the road we were on! We got in position, and he turned literally 10 feet from where we could have shot him, then crossed below us. Jasper got him bayed up in a pine thicket, and we walked to within 20 ' of the bear and could not see him it was so thick. He finally busted out, going straight away, and the chase was on. He made his way over to Bear Mtn, and just started walking circles. Donnie and Mark called, they had killed one with client Mo down south, a 205 lb. boar that has treed high up in a softwood in front of Marks dogs! They asked if we wanted help, and came up to help out guarding Rt11 to keep the dogs safe in case the chase turned that way. Tick ended up walking in and up over the mountain with client/ good buddy Brian and Russell, while I covered the road with client/ friend Dylan. Mark and Donnie kept calling out direction and driving in to turn the bear back towards us. Dylan and I were so close several times over the next couple hours , but it just wasn't meant to be, and finally the big bear made a try for the top of the mountain, where Tick, Brian, and Russell were waiting for him. As the bruin came up over the rocks, Brian sent a bullet through his side, and he toppled back into the rocks. We all made the climb in with the jet sled to help get the big bear out, and for photos, of course!
The massive bear weighed in at 451 lbs on certified scales at Wilderness Variety.! Congratulations Brian on another monster bear, 2 years in a row!
We tried our best over the next 3 days, but just couldn't find another big bear for Dylan. We tried one on Saturday, but she was a nasty old sow that gave Gecko a thrashing almost as a warning to us. We all decided it was a good idea to heed her warning and pulled off her!
A huge THANK YOU goes out to Dylan for being such a great sportsmen and having such a positive attitude about going home empty handed. I really appreciate it!
Well that's all for now I need to go do some scouting and find some moose for next week's hunters!

I know I'm a couple weeks behind, and I teased with a promise about a post, but the last few weeks have literally been such a blur of bears and hounds, that there literally has not been time.
So I'm gonna tease one last time, because there's only 2 days left of our hound season and one hunter left to tag out, and I will have time to do it right. All I can say is,...if you like hound hunting for bears, ...stay tuned,...cause we have loaded up the game pole to the breaking point this Fall!

Well the change over between week #3 and #4 was so fast and furious that I couldn't even find time to make the post, so here it is, better late than never! Our week #3 Fall Bear over bait was a tough one! Much like week #2, the first couple nights were slow, with very few sightings, and no kills. We finally got some action on Wednesday, but unfortunately a wounded bear and nothing on the game pole. We finally hung one up on Thursday when Phil from NH shot his 3rd bear with us in as many years, and another on Friday when Rick from FL harvested a young boar.By weeks end we had scratched and clawed our way to 3 bears, and 5 bears in total were shot at by 8 hunters. This was a great group people who had positive attitudes all week long and stayed hunting hard right to the last minute Saturday, and it paid off for Bob from NJ with his first Maine bear after 3 years of hard work!
A sincere congratulations to the successful hunters, and a sincere thank you to everyone who persevered thru a tough week of hunting!
Here's where I would normally say something like " on to week #4 " or " bring on round #4" but as I'm sitting here writing this post 4 days into week #4 ,all I can say is I can't wait to show what has happened this week here at SHC. It's big.....REAL BIG!

Week #2 is in the books! The hunting was tougher than it should have been, but we still managed to harvest 4 bears with 9 hunters over bait, and 1 monster bear by trapping! A couple of my repeat hunters passed on small bears, even at the end of the week, and I'm thankful for that.
Even though the hunting was tough, it was a great group of hunters who never got cranky or gloomy because of the weather, or slow bear action, and that is greatly appreciated! We had a lot of laughs and fun times in the lodge, and I look forward to hunting with them all again!
It was awesome to be part of my brother in law Chris Downs first trapping experience, and boy were we surprised to find a bruiser of a bear caught early Wednesday morning! Congratulations Chris on your 442lb " bear of a lifetime".
Thank you to everyone who made it a great week, now on to #3!

Well week #1 is in the books and overall it ended up pretty decent!
We had 12 hunters, and they harvested 6 bears. Not all 12 hunters stayed all week, and 2 of them hunted together most of the week, so the 50 % kill ratio number is slightly skewed, but I'll take it with a smile! The smallest bear was 98 pounds( a healthy yearling boar) and the largest was a 254 lb. dry sow.
Congratulations to all the successful hunters and thank you to everyone for a safe and fun week of hunting and great camp comradarie!
Week #2 hunters arrived yesterday and are eager to get onto stand later today!

Night number one of our 2025 Fall Bear Season got off to a great start around 6:15 when Greg from PA harvested a 185 lb dry sow on the old Carver bait site!
Not long after, around 7, Spencer from NH let loose with a volley of shots .
We struggled to find the bear with very little blood to go on , so we brought in Jasper and he made quick work of the trailing job leading us straight to Spencer's first Maine bear!, 196 lb. dry sow!
Congratulations guys great job!
