What does ppm and ppb actually mean ⁉️

Parts per million and parts per billion are used to describe extremely small concentrations, but the difference in scale can be difficult to visualize.

As a simple time comparison:
• One part per million is approximately one second in 11.6 days ⏱️
• One part per billion is approximately one second in 31.7 years 🗓️

In gas detection, concentrations at ppm or ppb levels can still be significant. Hazardous gases may be present at concentrations that cannot be reliably identified by sight or smell alone, making suitable monitoring essential.
