Water safety shouldn’t feel inaccessible…

but for many families, it does…

Because knowing your child needs water safety support and knowing HOW to teach it, are two VERY different things.

Safety skills that don’t generalize
Traditional swim lessons that move too fast
Fear around water attraction or elopement
Visual learners needing different teaching approaches
Resources that weren’t designed for all abilities

And when progress feels hard, families often blame themselves for feeling stuck…

But the truth is:
✨ it’s not a lack of care.
✨ it’s a lack of accessible tools and guidance.

At Swim Angelfish, we see this every day.

Families trying everything they can…while searching for resources that actually meet their child where they are.

That’s why we created the All Abilities Water Safety Activity Book.

✔ Teaching water safety through visuals and repetition…
Because many learners benefit from predictable, concrete instruction.

✔ Supporting conversations around safety…
Including asking permission, pool rules, emergency awareness, and routines.

✔ Creating opportunities to practice OUTSIDE the pool…
Because water safety learning shouldn’t only happen during swim lessons.

✔ Making safety concepts more accessible…
For visual learners, neurodivergent swimmers, and children who learn differently.

✔ Empowering caregivers, instructors, and therapists…
With practical tools that can be used at home, in clinics, schools, and swim programs.

Needing a different approach to water safety doesn’t mean a child “can’t learn.”

It means they deserve instruction that fits how their brain and body process the world.

And families deserve resources that feel supportive…not overwhelming.

When caregivers have accessible tools, they gain:
✨ More confidence teaching water safety
✨ Clearer ways to reinforce skills consistently
✨ Better communication around expectations and routines
✨ More opportunities for practice beyond the pool

Because water safety education should include EVERY learner.

49% is not just a statistic, it’s a signal to act.

Roughly half of children with autism attempt to elope from a safe environment after age four. That reality is why the Monitor & Intervene pillar of the Swim Angelfish Water Safety Toolkit exists, and why supervision alone is not enough.

Monitoring and intervening means adding layers of protection beyond watching:

Anticipating behavior and understanding why a child may wander
Creating physical and environmental safeguards
Actively intervening before a child reaches water

While children with autism and other special needs face a higher risk of drowning, elopement and impulsive water-seeking behavior are not exclusive to any diagnosis.

Neurotypical children wander.

Children run toward water.

Accidents happen fast...and risk does not discriminate.

That’s why water safety must go further:
✔️ Vigilance
✔️ Predictability
✔️ Proactive intervention
✔️ Reinforced routines (like asking permission and pausing before entering water)

Water safety isn’t passive.
It’s intentional.
It’s layered.
And it’s everyone’s responsibility.

Preparation matters. Familiarity matters.
And layered protection matters.

Our Adaptive Water Safety Toolkit is always available FREE on our website: https://swimangelfish.com/water-safety-for-all-abilities/

Fun fact: we also include underwater breath holding and other water-seeking behaviors inside our new All Abilities Adaptive Water Safety Activity Book to help families continue practicing these concepts in a fun, hands-on way. You can grab your copy here: https://swimangelfish.com/water-safety-activity-book/

We’re also proud to partner with organizations like to continue spreading life-saving water safety education to more families and communities everywhere.

Last week at IAFTC 2026, we were reminded just how special the aquatic therapy and adaptive aquatics community truly is.

There is something incredibly powerful about being surrounded by professionals from around the world who all share the same mission: creating safer, more inclusive, and more supportive experiences in and around the water.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to present our specialty course on Aquatic Therapy and Exercise for Autism, connect with so many passionate professionals, and continue learning alongside others who are deeply committed to advancing this field.

One of the best parts of conferences like IAFTC is the collaboration, the conversations between sessions, the sharing of ideas, the willingness to learn from one another, and the collective passion for helping individuals thrive through aquatic environments.

To everyone who attended our course, stopped to connect, or shared your experiences with us, thank you. We left feeling inspired, energized, and incredibly hopeful about the future of adaptive aquatics.

✨ We shared a full recap of our time at IAFTC 2026, including highlights from our course and reflections from the week, on the blog:

800 MEMBERS strong in our Swim Whisperers® community!! 🩷✨

Our private Swim Whisperers® Facebook group has officially reached 800 members… and we couldn’t be more proud of what this community has become.

This group is made up of aquatic professionals who have completed at least Swim Whisperers® Level 1 certification, instructors, therapists, coaches, and advocates from all over the world who are committed to creating safer, more inclusive experiences in and around the water.

Inside the group, professionals share:
✔️ Adaptive aquatics tips
✔️ Real-life teaching strategies
✔️ Questions & advice
✔️ Wins, breakthroughs, and challenges
✔️ Support from others who truly “get it”

It’s one of the many perks of becoming Swim Whisperers® certified… having access to a collaborative community that continues learning together long after the course is complete.

And while we’re celebrating 800 members, that does NOT mean only 800 professionals have been certified. Not everyone chooses to join the Facebook group (and not everyone has Facebook!), and that’s completely okay. 🩵

What matters most to us is seeing this movement continue to grow. We now have Swim Whisperers® certified professionals in all 50 states and beyond, helping make adaptive swim instruction and water safety more accessible for swimmers of all abilities worldwide.

To every professional who has taken the time to learn, grow, collaborate, and advocate alongside us… thank you.

We’re just getting started. ✨

15 families 🩵
Yesterday’s safety day helped 15 families with immediate water safety strategies for their loved ones who are at a higher risk of drowning.

That’s 15 opportunities to change a child’s relationship with water safety.

Today at our adaptive water safety event, we worked hands-on with families of children with autism and other diagnoses that can increase drowning risk, sharing REAL strategies they can start using immediately.

From ritual & routine… to safety cues… to understanding behavior in and around water… every small step matters.

Because water safety isn’t one-size-fits-all.
And prevention starts long before swim lessons.

A huge thank you to Massachusetts State Police Dive Team, the City of Cambridge, and to Marian Ryan at the D.A’s office for her continued efforts in supporting these events to address drowning prevention.

We’re so proud of every family who showed up today ready to learn, practice, advocate, and take action for safer experiences around water.

What an AMAZING first day kicking off IAFTC 2026! ✨

One of the biggest highlights was hosting our specialty course: “Aquatic Therapy & Exercise for Autism: Understanding Sensory Needs”

We had such an incredible time connecting with passionate aquatic professionals from around the world and diving deep into sensory seekers vs. sensory avoiders, regulation strategies, individualized aquatic planning, and how we can better support swimmers with autism in aquatic environments.

The conversations, collaboration, and shared passion for making aquatics more inclusive and effective were truly inspiring.

Huge thank you to everyone who joined us! We’re feeling energized, grateful, and even more excited for the rest of the conference. ✨

While we spend a lot of time teaching children how to be safe around water, we also have to teach them what safety and rescue LOOK like…

For many children with sensory challenges, autism, anxiety, or other developmental differences, rescue equipment can feel unfamiliar, overwhelming, or even frightening in an emergency.

That’s why one important part of our Adaptive Water Safety Toolkit focuses on rescue equipment familiarity.

✔️ Touching and holding a rescue tube
✔️ Practicing with it in and out of the water
✔️ Seeing it thrown toward them
✔️ Learning that rescue equipment = safety, not fear

Because in a real emergency, the first time a child experiences rescue equipment should NOT be during a rescue.

Water safety isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Preparation matters. Familiarity matters.

And layered protection matters.

Our Adaptive Water Safety Toolkit is always available FREE on our website: https://swimangelfish.com/water-safety-for-all-abilities/

Fun fact: we also included rescue equipment familiarity activities inside our new All Abilities Adaptive Water Safety Activity Book to help families continue practicing these concepts in a fun, hands-on way. You can grab your copy here: https://swimangelfish.com/water-safety-activity-book/
