Whitetail Valley Cellars Iowa Apfel Wein and other fruit wines handcrafted with Swiss quality and Streuobstweise grown fruit.

The Kutzli family began planting apple trees on the hillsides of Whitetail Valley Farm in 2010. We reclaimed a traditional orchard practice from our ancestral home in Switzerland called Streuobstwiese, or “meadow orchard.” Meadow orchard trees are widely spaced, full sized trees of many different varieties. This traditional growing method allows maximum exposure to the soil, sunshine and breezes

that produce the special terrior that makes the best apples and best wine. Unlike modern intensive orchard growing practices, Streuobstwiesen are sustainably managed with minimal chemical inputs. It encourages beneficial pollinators and balance of the orchard environment. We produce rare antique varieties from Europe, England, and America and many modern varieties as well. The Iowa climate and prairie loam soil gives our ciders their own special character. We are currently designing our winery facility, Kelterei - Kützli. We plan a modern facility where we can hand craft small batches of our Äpfelweine (apple wines), and hard ciders in modern interpretations of traditional styles. We plan to produce varietal wines using specific apple cultivars, seasonal specialty wines for special occasions, and apple related products. We hope that you will taste the care, the tradition and the sunshine of an Iowa summer in every glass!

Here is the June Newsletter.

Our Monthly Event for June is a Father’s Day Special June 19, 20 & 21 It is a special meat and cheese plate featuring Harvest Barn beef sticks and summer sausage. Harvest Barn meats come from the Boyer family farm in Osceola and are made from 100% Limousin beef. They have been big customer favorites. Your dad will love them. We also have Decatur Dairy Cheese and Hansen Dairy cheddar curds. Enjoy them at the winery and take some along for Dad to enjoy at home. It is hard to find a gift for Dad on Father’s Day. No coffee mugs or joke gifts. I absolutely never could understand giving your dad a neck tie. Wouldn’t dad really rather have a great time together with his family and some beverages, food and good stuff to take to enjoy at home?

Orchard work is getting done so time to get going with construction projects. Painting panels for the ceiling on the porch. Birds are thinking this is a great place for a home, but they make a mess so it needs to get closed in. There are plenty of other places for them to roost. I need to put up the rest of the porch lights too. At least it is shady under the porch roof!

We had a great graduation day yesterday at Das Stubli tasting room. It is going to be a great day today at Whitetail Valley to come and relax in the country with some of our new wines and old favorites too. We open at 2 today and are open tomorrow at 2 as well. Remember those who have handed on to us the blessings we enjoy and have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
