The Kutzli family began planting apple trees on the hillsides of Whitetail Valley Farm in 2010. We reclaimed a traditional orchard practice from our ancestral home in Switzerland called Streuobstwiese, or “meadow orchard.” Meadow orchard trees are widely spaced, full sized trees of many different varieties. This traditional growing method allows maximum exposure to the soil, sunshine and breezes
that produce the special terrior that makes the best apples and best wine. Unlike modern intensive orchard growing practices, Streuobstwiesen are sustainably managed with minimal chemical inputs. It encourages beneficial pollinators and balance of the orchard environment. We produce rare antique varieties from Europe, England, and America and many modern varieties as well. The Iowa climate and prairie loam soil gives our ciders their own special character. We are currently designing our winery facility, Kelterei - Kützli. We plan a modern facility where we can hand craft small batches of our Äpfelweine (apple wines), and hard ciders in modern interpretations of traditional styles. We plan to produce varietal wines using specific apple cultivars, seasonal specialty wines for special occasions, and apple related products.
