It could be another very active severe weather day in the Midwest. The SPC has placed a Moderate Risk in much of northern Illinois west to the Mississippi River. There is uncertainty on how well the air mass will recover behind a currently ongoing squall line, but signs are that it is already recovering. There are outflow boundaries also being left behind, hence strong to intense tornadoes are possible. The storms will expand into Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan later this evening.

Tornado shelters are few and far between in the region, which is largely because the area has a large number of basements which provide a good alternative. That said, there are a few you can find at findyourtornadoshelter.com. One other thing: if you get a warning, you will get a phone call if you sign up for WeatherCall NexGen if a tornado or dangerous storm is coming. No delay, tailored right for your area. An active series of days are expected across the Midwest. The region is looking at a potential multiple-day severe weather threat, with significant tornadoes being at least some possibility.

It is worth noting that the region has far more basements available, hence storm shelters are far less prevalent. That said, some have been mapped out at findyourtornadoshelter.com - and more are being investigated.

The severe weather threats appear lower this week, but never say never, as we saw last night in SE Alabama where a tornado hit Dothan (despite a marginal environment).

Regardless, a quieter time is a good time to discuss tornado shelter opportunities and set out plans with emergency management agencies. Since you never know when things will pick up again.

By the way, the founder (me, Dr. Craig Ceecee) is preparing to write a book about weather sheltering and preparation, and hopefully will be ready by the end of the year (although that is a very hopeful estimate - we shall see). It's something to look forward to.

A PDS Tornado Watch is now in effect for parts of central Kansas and extreme southeast Nebraska. There aren't that many tornado shelters in the area, although there are more to the south and east that will likely be under additional watches later today.

It is worth noting that more tornado shelters are being added to the map and we are working to expand such. Make sure you share this link!

2 tornado watches are currently in effect across the Central Plains. The most intense storms are currently moving into Sioux Falls, SD where wind gusts of 70-75 mph are likely along with an embedded tornado threat.

Tornado shelters are not particularly abundant in the region. If there is one close to you, it might be a good option. Otherwise, if warned, basement is best - then an interior room on the lowest floor without windows.

A significant severe weather threat will exist for the next couple of days.

This afternoon and evening, the focus will be from SW Minnesota through the Siouxland area into central Nebraska, with lower confidence areas further south into Kansas and Oklahoma, as well as in central Michigan. Numerous tornadoes are possible, with a few possibly strong, if the main convective mode is supercellular. That said, it is quite possible that these become a squall line quickly, reducing the tornado threat. It is worth noting that tornado shelters are fairly uncommon in the area, primarily because basements are far more common (but if any are found, they will be added!).

Tomorrow, a more significant threat is possible from western Iowa into eastern and central Kansas and northern Oklahoma. This will include a higher potential for significant tornadoes, possibly EF-3 or stronger, with any sustained long track supercell. The SPC has already increased the threat level for such. Tornado shelters are somewhat more prevalent in that threat area.

All locations can be identified at findyourtornadoshelter.com. You should also sign up for WeatherCall NexGen - it will call you the moment dangerous severe weather is coming your way and call you again if a tornado is on the ground. A very concerning setup is developing for this weekend into early next week. The SPC has already highlighted parts of the Central Plains and a good chunk of the Upper Midwest for a higher-end severe weather threat.

On Sunday, the focus looks to be in the upper Missouri Valley. All threats will be in play - very large hail, wind and at least a few tornadoes, possibly strong. There are questions, however, about capping which could limit the activity in the region.

Depending on what happens Sunday, a more widespread threat may evolve on Monday, particularly from Wisconsin and Iowa through the lower Missouri Valley into the Central Plains. The threats remain somewhat conditional (based on convection from Sunday) and the entire area could see very large hail and numerous to many tornadoes, some strong to intense. In the evening, a squall line should form with an increased damaging wind (and continued tornado) threat.

These are not set in stone, but the threat level is there. If there are any tornado shelters that we are not aware of, they will be investigated and added if they meet the standards.

It's quiet now, but about to get BUSY!

A significant severe weather threat is possible (if not likely) Sunday into Monday, with more isolated severe weather threats at other times over the next week. The areas of highest risk are in the Central Plains, particularly from the Siouxland area south into Missouri and Kansas.

Tornado shelters aren't particularly common in the region of greatest threat as basements are more prevalent. Nonetheless, it is likely some are missing from the data set at https://findyourtornadoshelter.com - so if any are known, please forward them up!

You can also be well prepared by signing up for WeatherCall NexGen. As a proud affiliate, you will get a phone call the moment dangerous weather is coming your way - and it works on your phone, day or night, providing additional layers of protection. Scan below or sign up here for $15 for one year of service: https://ngorder.wxriskalerts.com/db_app2.php?station=tsmx - it's extremely valuable for getting ahead of the storms.

While the next few days see a limited tornado threat, a more significant threat may emerge this weekend into early next week. The SPC has already highlighted parts of the Plains and Midwest for severe storms, with Sunday into Monday likely resulting in the most widespread severe weather activity - including possibly tornadoes. That said, it is much too soon to be confident on the exact degree of the threat.

Now is the time to know where your best severe weather options are if the threat emerges. If there are any tornado shelters that we are unaware of, pass them on and an investigation can be undertaken for addition to the map at https://findyourtornadoshelter.com so we all know where they are.

Additionally, it's also the ideal time to sign up for WeatherCall NexGen. You'll get the peace of mind with a phone call if dangerous weather is coming your way, and it is cheaper than a cup of coffee each month.
