Corn is quickly reaching maturity across the MidSouth. Many farmers are talking about denting, black layer, and starch line. While these terms refer to maturity stages during the final stretch of the crop, they are also physiological indicators of when to stop irrigation. Generally it takes 21 days after dent before the corn
reaches physiological maturity, or "black line". After dent, the starch line
begins to move down the kernel acting as a 21 day "hour glass" til black layer. These last days before
maturity are important to maximize kernel weight. The goal is to run out of adequate soil moisture at the same time you reach maturity. Known soil
moisture and time to black laver can inform you of timing on last irrigation.
