REMEMBERING PAT KRAFT

"I want you all to know ... if I don’t get this right, my career is over, understand that," Pat Kraft said in the secret audio tapes leaked late last year. "If I don’t hire the right person, my career is over. So, it’s very serious to me. This isn’t like what people just think. You (players) are going to graduate and move on. If I don’t find the right person, in two years they will fire my (expletive), and I don’t get another AD job.”

Dr Kraft is not going to get his two years. PSU President Neeli Bendapudi was seething in anger over those audio tapes. She had to personally jump in when the Nittany Lions became the laughing stock of the nation as a 54-day search became intolerable. Penn State was used & brutalized. Mocked & disgraced. She wanted to fire Kraft then. Instead she made him apologize before Matt Campbell was introduced in one of the most bizarre press conferences in sports history. She finalized the hiring after Kraft said he had the wrong ISU email. One of the vice-presidents of this university. In 2025.

The openly-ugly fan reaction that ended the Franklin tenure is back. Glimpses after the Homecoming collapse vs Wisconsin. Some ugly exchanges in Evanston. Water bottles & catcalls raining down on Beaver Stadium after coming up short to beleaguered Lincoln Riley, who doesn’t win road games & never outsmarts anyone. Except Matt Campbell. (Even Franklin beat Riley in LA).

The game gaffes are all on coaching. They have been noticeable & embarrassing. The crappy roster is not on Campbell. Hired late he could not recruit. All but two PSU recruits bolted: one a seldom-used DE + one a former QB who is now a 9th-string TE. Tennessee, VT, USC, etc pilfered our best veteran players. Campbell had to bring in his former players. Had no choice. Along with projects from Texas State & UCLA. With Christmas two months away, the Nittany Mountain is now the land of misfit toys.

Next year’ recruiting class? 22nd in NIL. Not a single commit from 100 attendees in that recruiting lounge Saturday. Crazy comments about PSU is not about winning/we are about developing men. Recruits looking at each other like is this dude serious? If the Marines talked like that we’d all be speaking Farsi.

We have said for ten yrs on here you aren’t beating Ohio State with three stars. We can’t even get three stars anymore. Squandered the easiest schedule PSU will see in decades. Three games Lions were favored in. Kobe Howard will come back just in time to boost his transfer stock the last five games. He won’t be alone. Will the last player leaving Happy Valley please turn off the lights?

Bendapudi already searching for next AD. I don’t expect Kraft to see another Thanksgiving in Happy Valley. And for that we will be truly thankful.

🌽 🟥 PRICE SLASHING - Nebraska has just announced that 85% of season ticket holders will see a DECREASE in their costs for next season. Season tickets will start at $299 (previously $420). Fans are estimated to save between $175-$500 per ticket depending on the area of the stadium they are in.

The moves comes despite the stadium capacity lowering from 85,000 to 65,000 during a $600 million revitalization project (sound familiar?). Over 50% of the stadium will be under $700 per season ticket. Nebraska sits at 5-1. The Nebraska pricing chart is in the comments.

Meanwhile, Penn State sits at 3-3 and has raised most prices for all tickets starting next year...

Matt Campbell's message to recruits last week:

"You guys are in a really tough time right now in this college football world. It's not easy. There is a lot of stuff going on and all of us have played this game, being a part of this journey, having these experiences. It's so different right now. I think you guys, knowing what these institutions are looking for, and finding the right fit for each and every one of you is critically important.

I would just say from our end, the 3 values that we are looking for relentlessly. Number one is still finding great-character young men. Understanding that this value system still wins in our sport, as you are seeing all over college football, every week adversity is showing up. Tough situations are happening individually and collectively for teams. To me, the teams that have unbelievable character are the ones that still preserve and reach their full potential at the end of the football season. We define character in two ways. One in terms of what that videotape says. I really couldn't care less about your highlight film. It's so overrated, it's not even real. The reality is, when tough things happen to you whether you drop a ball or get beat on a play, how do you respond? Are you bitching or whining or complaining, or are you the guy that has the ability to play the next play and move yourself forward?

The other thing I would say is your character and your community. One of the really cool things that we have here is you're talking about one of the greatest communities in all of college football. Now, this is college football town USA. We are not living in Austin, TX or Columbus, OH where you are just part of it. We are it. So how you move, how you carry yourself, man, everywhere our guys go everybody knows who they are. For some people, that is really good but for some people that's now how you want to live. But I'd rather be honest with you because if you use your platform to create real change, it's really really powerful. These 110,000 people that come watch every Saturday, you just do the right things and carry yourself the right way and treat people the right way. You will literally be set for the rest of your life using this platform.

I would say value number 2 is the ability to have a great passion for the game of football. I do think one thing that's going on right now in college football is you find out who loves football. I'm going to give a firm reminder to everybody, yes, it's really cool to come on a night like the whiteout and see 110,000 people at a game but that's, it's a mirage a little bit. There are only 12 guaranteed games every year. You better find out what's going on the other 350+ days of the year. Who are the leaders? What is the locker room like? What are the coaches like? Are tough times going to come? I guarantee it. We've been really fortunate; the last place we are we had 50+ NFL players in the last 5 years. You know what all 50 went through? Somewhere in their career they went through really hard things. Injuries, not getting playing time, and man, all of a sudden having success and then having failures and having to work through it... It is 18-22 year old college football. Our sport has not changed and that is not changing. There will be tough days, tough situations, and the great ones find the right for them with the ability to persevere and become the best they can be. That is still college football today.

The last thing that I remind everybody about is in the world of college football, these are still student athletes. We are looking for young men that understand the value of an education. Now you're talking about one of the greatest academic institutions in the entire world. You're talking about Indiana and Penn State as the two highest number of graduates in the entire world right now. This and Harvard are the two highest applied institutions in the entire country. So getting a degree from here and setting yourself up with our former players, our alumni base, you should literally be set for life. Our guys are going to sit in the first two rows, our guys will go to class, and if that's now what you want to do, if you'd rather be in the online world, then again, you should not come to school here at Penn State. What we are about is developing the whole human. We are not wavering, we are not flinching, and we are really excited about what we've got to offer."

Summary of Matt Campbell's press conference today:

Q: "Big recruiting weekend, how did things go with everything, and do you think winning/losing impacts anything?"
A: It was a great weekend in terms of the number of players we have identified over the last 6 months that were here for the game. Seeing that environment and our football team grow are all positives. Winning still matters, but I think from our end it was great.

Q: "What went into the decision to lean more into Carson Hansen last weekend, and what will the RB rotation look like moving forward?"
A: I think the style of run game that we wanted to play with was the beginning portion of that. Him and James were probably closer to where we want to be with the RB room. We still have faith in Quinton & Cam. I think right now for where we are and what we have seen, like Carson running inside the 20-yard line and James having the ability to make explosive runs. Those 2 with catching the ball in the backfield and some of the protection things started to show itself.

Q: "Mouse just told us that your run game doesn't have an identity. What were you hoping it would be and what would you say it is right now?"
A: Trying to figure out especially up front where we can settle this group into. We have dabbled in a bit of everything, trying to find what these guys go best and give them confidence. I do feel like there were some things against USC that were positive and we can build from, but having the ability to adjust when people take that away is part of the frustration. There were moments where they did some really good things, but the consistency is the missing piece of where we want to be. Great growth but not enough growth to win football games.

Q: "Where are you in the process of creating a championship program, and how much patience is necessary? What is your next step in this process?
A: We are not wavering. We are going to build the right foundation, standards, and expectations for how we do things. Where we are not is where we need to be in terms of the ability to finish football games when it gets hard. Offense and defense: 2 drives where we get the ball inside the 20-yard line and don't finish with TD's. That was the difference in the game. Defensively, 3rd and 15 or 3rd and 10, it's the same story where we can't finish the drive and get off the fieid. Our kids went right back to work even in the locker room right after the game. They wrap their arms around each other and you will find a lot more about us this week at Michigan. That is the narrative, and we are not going to flinch.

Q: "The late subs that lead to timeouts, what happens in those situations and what needs to change?"
A: The first one in the first half was a mechanic error, and the big ten admitted on Monday they were wrong. That one was definitely a unique situation. The second one in the 3rd quarter was coaching, and that's on us. We subbed late, we were going to go to a tempo play as we weren't sure if it was a 3rd down to 1st down situation. The last one of the game during the punt situation was that the punter came on the field then off the field. We put a return group on and the QB came back. It's a great lesson coaching-wise, and I put it more on myself than anyone else. I did not want to chance it even though I thought we could have. 2 of the 3 were certainly coaching, and it starts with me.

Q: "Can you describe the team morale after a few losses and when do you begin to look further into the roster as you look ahead?"
A: I think you only look further if the players that are playing now are not accountable to the standards of growing forward. That is the one thing I have not seen, they have not wavered from standards and accountability. I think the only time that I would go away from a player on our roster is if there is a lack of personal accountability. Certainly matching schemes, Marcus on the bench last week, we were trying to get more coverage on the field against a top skill group. We are all searching for the right answers from a personnel standpoint.

Q: "You didn't have Tatsch for USC. In Big Ten play, other than Tony, are you concerned about the depth at LB?"
A: Absolutely. Alex had a tough situation at practice and we still do not know how bad that is or how long it's going to be. Hopefully we know more this week. On a positive note, Cam Smith is working back into the rotation. I would say absolutely that we thought it was a really healthy room that has thinned out.

Q: "Taylor Mouser just said he thinks about Koby Howard's return a lot. Do you have an update on him?
A: It's a post-bye week conversation. Koby is doing a great job working his way back but that is a post-bye week conversation for sure.

Q: "What has kept the running game from getting explosive plays?"
A: You see some of those plays last week that were blocked really well but the RB was on the wrong side as far as the inside or outside pad of the puller. There were a couple where 1 guy was off and we can't get to where we need to get to for the explosive play. I sound like a broken record but I will tell you it's inches rather than gaps and we will continue to pound away at it. Riker took a huge step this week. The lack of consistency puts us in a tough spot.

Q: "Lavar Arrington you said 4-6 weeks. Where is he at in recovery? Also, in regard to D'Anton Lynn in the booth versus on the field, how do you think that is going?
A: Lavar is probably like Koby. A post-bye week conversation to return. When it comes to Lynn, to me, I think one of the things that is helpful is his ability to tie everything together while on the sideline and make the needed adjustments. His ability to tie it all together rather than being upstairs and not making the right adjustments.

Q: "At media day you said there was a lot to prove. Do you still feel like there is a lot to prove and if so what?"
A: Well I think we have a whole lot to prove. I've said it since January. Adversity is going to hit, and are we tough enough to work through really hard things. Building a culture and program, there must be expectations and standards. I don't care what league you are in, hard things are going to happen and it takes hard-minded humans to fix the gaps. It doesn't matter about winning and losing, its the character of the football program and how we work through hard moments. That is the mentality we have had since day 1 and it has not wavered since.
