Leak #4 of 7: the F**A tip credit you can still claim for tax years you already closed. Most owners do not know it is retroactive. The IRS lets you amend three open tax years on Form 8846, so the payroll tax credit you earned at 7.65% on every reported tip does not disappear when the year ends. For a restaurant like this one, the three open years add up to about $61,400 you can still recover. Illustrative example.

Leak #5 of 7 is the one your payroll company never points out. Follow so the algorithm shows it to you.

How to read your restaurant merchant statement: the $1,000 a month most owners overpay.

Pull last month's statement, add up every fee, divide by your total card volume. That is your effective rate. For a restaurant it should sit under 3%. At $100,000 a month in card sales, 3% is $3,000 in fees, and a big slice of that is markup and junk fees you can cut. You also pay that percentage on every tip your guests add.

Follow us for money moves that pay for themselves, the kind your accountant keeps missing.

What is your effective rate? Pull the statement and drop it below.

Restaurant F**A Tip Credit: the $15,300 most owners never claim.

You already paid 7.65% payroll tax on every tip your team reported. The IRS gives it back through Form 8846. For a 10-server restaurant where each reports about $20,000 a year in tips, that is up to roughly $15,300 back. Every year. And you can still amend up to 3 open tax years.

Most accountants never file the form. We hunt this down for a living.
