Former Illinois sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson was sentenced to 20 years in prison—the maximum penalty allowed under state law—for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, an unarmed Black mother who called emergency services for help regarding a possible prowler.

In July 2024, Massey called emergency services for a suspected prowler outside her Springfield, Illinois, home. After deputies entered her kitchen, a verbal exchange occurred over a pot of boiling water on the stove. Body-cam footage showed Massey ducking and apologizing before Grayson fired three shots, striking her in the face.

Grayson was charged with first-degree murder but, in October 2025, a jury convicted him of the lesser charge of second-degree murder after he claimed he acted in self-defense. Under Illinois law, this verdict applies when a defendant has an unreasonable but actual belief in the need to use deadly force.

On January 29, 2026, Judge Ryan Cadagin sentenced Grayson to 20 years in prison. Because of good behavior credits and time already served, legal experts note he could be released in just over 8.5 years.

The killing sparked widespread protests and prompted the Massey family to push for the "Sonya Massey Act" at the federal and state levels, which would require stricter background checks and personnel-record sharing for police hires.
