Twenty-five years.
2,977 people were killed on September 11, 2001. Among them, 441 first responders — 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 Port Authority officers, 23 NYPD officers, and 8 EMTs and paramedics — who went up the stairs while everyone else was coming down.
On Staten Island, nobody needs that explained to them. Almost every block here knows a name.
And it did not stop that morning. More FDNY members have now died of 9/11-related illness than were killed that day. This year, for the first time, the ceremony adds a seventh moment of silence — for the ones we are still losing.
We remember all of them.
Never forget.
