Checking on the new queens I added to 24 splits in the Augusta County yard. Picked up some Italian Poline 2.0’s from Tucka Bee

Test #1 They must be gentle. So I wander in the bee yard and work the new girls in shorts and minimal to no protection. Thank the Lord they passed with flying colors. Super gentle, don’t run on the comb and they did not staple my socks to my ankles.

Test #2 They must have VSH expression and I must say it is apparent as I was able to witness chewing/uncapping of cells and see the aftermath of removed pupa by the slightly spotty pattern.

All in all I am very impressed with these girls and I am excited to see how they improve the quality of my yards genes and over all performance.

Thanks Tucka!

PS- Now to put on the proper gear and check the other hives. 😜

A little behind here in Western Washington on our 1st round of brood breaks/splits due to continuous rain and cold weather. The multiple brood breaks combined with other measures is how we maintain 100% chemical/treatment free honey yards.

Each hive that was split has 2 fat queen cells like the one pictured at the bottom of the frame.

We are still trying to build our numbers back up to where they were before our near total loss in the Boisfort valley flood in January.

It’s HOT on the farm...Make sure your animals are as cool as possible. Shade, water and little to no feed during day to reduce body heat. We reserve the “jungle paddock” just for situations like this!

“You want to make swarm on me?”
“I make swarm on you!”
Ok, so, seriously, swarm season is officially here and we had to make artificial swarms that mimic what Mother Nature does in order to prevent our hives from swarming on us. Turning one hive into two. The hives that are left will now have what we call a brood break to help battle varroa mites naturally, without harsh chemicals, focusing on making a new queen and that delicious Boisfort Valley honey.

Well it never fails... “hey eric when do you think the lambs will drop?” “Do we need to ask, it will be one of the days I’m at work this week” and without fail the lambs started to drop while I was away at work. I love how much these kids enjoy farm life.

A glimpse of the farm during chores today. Even on cold and rainy days this place does not disappoint.
