California Quail (Callipepla californica)
📸 Steve Dykema

Both males and females sport the iconic forward-curving crest of feathers, known as a topknot. However, the males (like the one pictured here) truly stand out with a striking "mask"—bold black face feathers sharply outlined in crisp white.

While it is the official state bird of California, this bird is famous for a social vocalization that sounds exactly like it’s calling out, “Chi-ca-go!” You can debate whether this dapper avian belongs in the Windy City or on the West Coast, but there is no denying it is one of the most stylish birds in the wild.

Crab Spider
📸 Mark VanderWerp

Nature doesn’t play favorites. Crab spiders are "sit-and-wait" predators that camouflage themselves to match the color of the surrounding vegetation. In this shot, having left the yellow petals, the spider's camo is no longer working—but its slow, stealthy movements allow it to sneak up on this solitary bee without detection.

We are witnessing the moment before the strike. Will the spider’s spiny front legs and venomous fangs be powerful enough to subdue its prey? Or will the bee’s reflexes and speed allow it to pollinate another flower?

You’ve probably already decided which side to root for, but the lesson here is balance. Having safe places for predators to dwell is nature’s ancient form of pest management. You may cringe at a spider hunting a bee, but would you cheer if its target were a cockroach?

🏠 New Year, New (Pest-Free) Home! 🥂

As you’re setting your resolutions for 2026, don’t forget to add one that protects your health and your home: Pest Prevention. Being proactive can help protect you all year long.

Pest Prevention Checklist:

🚫 Seal the Gaps: Check doors, windows, and utility lines. If a pencil can fit, a mouse can too!

📦 Store Food Securely: Move pantry items and pet food into airtight, sealed containers.

🧹 Clear the Clutter: Pests love quiet, undisturbed hiding spots. Swap cardboard boxes for sealed plastic bins.

🌿 Maintain the Outdoors: Trim overhanging branches and clear debris from gutters to eliminate moisture.

📞 Call a Pro: If you hear scratching in the walls or see signs of an infestation, don't wait!

A little effort now means peace of mind all year long. Let’s make 2026 your healthiest, happiest year yet!
