New South Associates, Inc. New South Associates is a women-owned small business providing cultural resource management services

New South is a community of professionals that study culture. We research, excavate, measure, read, and listen to the information that individuals, documents, and artifacts tell us about the past. Our passion is bringing together these pieces into a story that enlivens our collective knowledge of American culture in our home communities, states, regions, and country. All of us have specialties but what really differentiates New South from other cultural resources firms is our ability to bring it all together. In our twenty plus years of business, we are proud to note that our work has crept out of technical reports into popular reports, spilled into brochures, been posted on interpretive signs and posters, presented at conferences and public addresses, appeared in videos, posted to the internet, and published in professional journals and books.

This week, Shawn Patch and Sarah Lowry are headed to the American Cultural Resources Association - ACRA conference at the Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego, California!

This year's conference theme, Collaboration and Shared Responsibility, explores how collective action and mutual accountability intersect with the protection of cultural resources through partnerships among federal, state, Tribal, and local entities, as well as communities, practitioners, and other stakeholders.

We're looking forward to a great conference and hope to see you there - be sure to pick up a Section 106 button designed by our very own Tracey Fedor!

Honor the history. Recognize the sovereignty. Celebrate the future.

This Indigenous Peoples Day, NCAI honors the strength, resilience, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples and reaffirms our commitment to Tribal sovereignty, Native voices, and the generations to come.

Recognition must extend beyond acknowledgment to meaningful action that respects Tribal Nations and fulfills treaty and trust obligations.

Many people have never heard of Section 106, but it plays an important role in protecting places that matter.

Before certain federal projects move forward, Section 106 requires agencies to identify historic and cultural resources, consult with Tribes and communities, consider potential effects, and explore ways to avoid or reduce harm.

Members of our North Carolina office recently met with Regional Director Justin Somers from Senator Ted Budd's office. The group had a productive conversation covering the current status of S.5653 and its potential impacts to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The discussion lasted more than an hour and highlighted the importance of continued dialogue between preservation professionals and policymakers. Justin shared that his office has been actively researching the bill and plans to connect the team with legislative staff in Washington for a follow-up discussion after the congressional recess.

We appreciate the opportunity to share our perspective and look forward to continuing the conversation.

Opinion: Before the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, the number of recorded archaeological sites and structures was but a fraction — 1% — of this total, and they were being destroyed at a rapid clip.

Proposed revisions to one of the NHPA’s most important statutes would result in similar losses. Section 106 of the NHPA requires that federal undertakings, like road or bridge construction or transmission lines, must account for the effects of that work on archaeological sites, historic structures, and cultural landscapes.

NSA Director of Archaeology Maureen Meyers and Sarah Love have an op-ed in today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution discussing how proposed changes to Section 106 could affect Georgia's archaeological sites, historic places, and the public's role in preservation.

As Maureen and Sarah note, "Without significant pushback from the public, these revisions will decimate historic preservation in America. The public will no longer be consulted on projects of concern."

Their article explores what's at stake for Georgia communities and why public participation remains critical to preserving places that tell our shared history.

Revisions to the Section 106 of 1966's National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) would put America’s historic resources in grave danger.
