Governor Hochul has declared a State of Emergency. During this time, we encourage all campus community members to to use caution when traveling and only travel when absolutely necessary.

Safety Tips:
To prepare for high winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rain, New Yorkers should take the following precautions:

Stay Informed: Regularly check local weather forecasts for updates on the storm's track and intensity. Ensure that government emergency alerts are enabled on your mobile phone.

Stay Out of the Water: Avoid swimming, surfing, or boating. Extremely dangerous rip currents and high surf make entering the ocean life-threatening. Stay off rock jetties and beaches where sudden high waves can sweep you into the water.

Do Not Drive Through Flooded Roads: If you encounter water on the roadway, turn around and find an alternate route. As little as six inches of moving water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, and two feet of water can sweep a car away.

Secure Outdoor Items: High winds can turn loose items into dangerous projectiles. Secure patio furniture, trash cans, umbrellas, and other outdoor decorations.

Prepare for Potential Power Outages: Charge your cell phones and other essential mobile devices. Keep flashlights and fresh batteries handy. Avoid using candles for emergency lighting due to fire risks.

Stay Clear of Downed Power Lines: Never touch or go near downed utility lines, as they may still be live and highly dangerous. Report downed lines immediately to your local utility provider.

Check on Neighbors: If safe to do so, check on vulnerable neighbors, friends, and family members, especially the elderly or those with functional needs to ensure they are safe and prepared.

Remember the golden rules at every crosswalk:
Pedestrians: Phones down, headphones off, heads up.

Drivers: Slow down, look up, and yield.

Commuter Alert: Upcoming East Campus Road Work

Starting Monday, August 24th, facilities will be conducting essential underground utility repairs.

Where: Health Sciences Dr & Pellegrino/Patriots Rd intersection

When: Aug 24 - 28

Impact: Lane closures and potential delays, though traffic will remain open in all directions.

🚨 PERRY WEATHER STATION TEST 🚨 On August 6 at 12:00 PM (noon), there will be a brief test of the Perry Weather station siren near the Stadium.

What you need to know:
It’s only a test and will last no more than 2 minutes.

Why it matters: This station alerts students and visitors near the stadium of nearby severe weather so they can safely evacuate.

We are testing it now so it’s fully ready to protect our community for the upcoming school year!

We Will Never Forget: September 11 Memorial Stadium Climb

We invite our community to come together as we remember, reflect, and support one another.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, please join us in a symbolic challenge to honor the immense courage and sacrifice of that day. Together, we will climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center Towers.
Please know that this event is for everyone. Whether you choose to climb, take a thoughtful walk, or simply sit in the stands to pay your respects, your presence is deeply meaningful to us.

SB Advisory: Extreme Heat Watch - Dangerous heat and humidity are hitting campus Wednesday through Saturday. Heat indices in Stony Brook are projected to reach up to 107° by Friday, peaking between noon and 8 PM daily.
