Nearly a century of printing does not happen without people who stay.

This September we are marking four work anniversaries at Albert Basse Associates. Diane Diana reaches 43 years and Chip Basse reaches 42, two careers that cover most of the time this company has been in Stoughton. Stephanie Roberts reaches 7 years and Thomas Gillis reaches 2.

Most printing is something you look at. This is something you run your hand across.

Textured printing builds a raised surface on the panel, anywhere from a light grain through to deep relief. It is what turns a flat sheet into brick, stone, timber or canvas, and it is what makes the raised lettering and braille on ADA signage work.

Replacing a sign starts with measuring the one already up there.

Before anything gets designed, someone has to survey the existing sign: how it is mounted, where the power comes in, how the face sits against the wall, and what the structure will actually carry. Skip that step and the new sign either does not fit the opening or does not light once it is up.

This one is 10 feet by 5 feet and backlit. Albert Basse Associates surveyed the old sign, produced the new one and installed it.

Banner stands do more work than anything else in a booth.

One sets up in a couple of minutes, takes a few square feet of floor, and rolls back into its own base when you are done. Retractables, X-frames and outdoor stands all take a new graphic without replacing the hardware, so the same stand can carry a different message at every show.

ABA prints banner stand graphics in-house and finishes them to fit the hardware you already own.

The same campaign has to work at three different distances.

At the road a driver gets about two seconds and one line of copy. In the aisle a shopper reads it from ten feet while walking. At the service counter the graphic is an arm's length away and every detail is visible, so the image has to hold up at full size.

Same artwork, three formats, three viewing distances, and the colour has to match on all of them because a customer sees all three within a minute of each other.

A wall graphic that runs 625 feet is not one print.

At that length the hard part is not the printing. It is consistency. Colour has to hold from the first panel to the last, the pattern has to line up at every seam, and the panels have to arrive labelled in the order they go on the wall, or the install turns into a puzzle.

This one is 625 feet long and 2 feet tall, designed, produced and installed by Albert Basse Associates.
