Our hearts are heavy as we mourn alongside the Durham Fire Department following the tragic loss of a firefighter in the line of duty this morning. We also keep the two firefighters injured in the fire close in our thoughts and prayers.

During this heartbreaking time, we extend our deepest condolences to the fallen firefighter’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters. May they find strength and comfort in the love and support of their community, and may those injured make a full and speedy recovery.

Today, we pause to remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape. Who said "We are still going up" as others were running away.

We remember the civilians who never made it home, the families whose lives were forever changed, and those who continue to carry the effects of that day.

Twenty-five years later, their courage, sacrifice, and service have not been forgotten.

Your Stovall Volunteer Fire Department honors all those we lost, all those who answered the call, and all those who carried on in the days, months, and years that followed.

Dale continues to show growth, dedication, and commitment to our department and the community we serve. We’re proud of everything he has accomplished and the work he continues to put in both around the firehouse and in his training.

The number one source of Home Fires? Your Kitchen. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries in North Carolina. Not faulty wiring. Not old smoke alarms. Your stove!

Here's the scary part: Most cooking fires happen in seconds. And most are preventable.

✅ Never leave cooking unattended: Not even to check on something else. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.
✅ Keep flammable items away: Towels, curtains, paper, packaging. All belong far from the stove.
✅ Turn pot handles inward: Keep them from being bumped or grabbed by children.
✅ If a grease fire starts, DON'T use water: Use a fire extinguisher or cover the pan with a metal lid to smother it.

For renters and apartment residents: Discuss fire safety with your landlord. Know the locations of extinguishers and familiarize yourself with escape routes. Your kitchen is the heart of your home, so keep it safe! 🔥

Members of the Stovall Volunteer Fire Department had the opportunity to attend the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo (SAFRE) last week!

Along with checking out some pretty impressive fire trucks, equipment, and new tools on the expo floor, SAFRE also offers educational sessions covering everything from leadership and fireground operations to emerging trends in the fire service.

Training doesn’t stop at our station. We actively seek out opportunities beyond our regular in-house training to learn from others in the fire service, expand our knowledge, and bring that information back to our department.

The goal is simple: keep learning, keep improving, and stay ready when our community needs us.

Happy National Volunteer Firefighter Day!

Today, we recognize the men and women who volunteer their time to protect and serve their communities.

Volunteer firefighters answer the call at all hours. Leaving family dinners, work, holidays, and warm beds behind when their neighbors need them most. They dedicate countless hours not only to responding to emergencies, but also to training and preparing for the next call.

To our members at Stovall Volunteer Fire Department, and to volunteer firefighters everywhere: thank you for your time, dedication, and commitment to your communities.

Congratulations to our July member of the month, Rob Stone, presented by Captain Christopher Frechette and Lieutenant Luke Sharon!

Rob has been going above and beyond by showing up to calls, attending our in-house training and also seeking additional accredited training opportunities outside our firehouse. He is currently working toward becoming an approved driver, so you might just see him behind the wheel of one of our engines soon! 🚒

We are proud of how far Rob has come in such a short time and look forward to seeing his continued growth.

Why Does It Look Smoky Outside?

If you've noticed hazy skies or the smell of smoke, you're not imagining it. Smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires is drifting into parts of the United States, including North Carolina, and can reduce air quality even when the fires are hundreds of miles away.

What can you do to protect yourself?
✅ Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) before spending extended time outdoors.
✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activities when air quality is poor.
✅ Keep windows and doors closed if smoke levels increase.
✅ If you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions, follow your healthcare provider's recommendations and keep medications readily available.
✅ Consider wearing a properly fitted N95 mask if you must be outdoors during periods of unhealthy air quality.
✅ Check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be more sensitive to poor air quality.
