In today’s fast-paced world, strong communication skills are essential for effective leadership. Last week, I attended a conference where industry leaders like Michael Bungay Stanier, Megan Hyatt Miller, Tiffany Aliche, and Will Guidara shared their best practices on engaging audiences and making a lasting impact through powerful communication. Here are top communication skills and leadership tips I believe every leader can apply.

1. Start with Storytelling for Immediate Engagement
Will Guidara opened his session with a powerful story about a defining career moment. Storytelling is a proven way to capture audience attention and establish a meaningful connection. Sharing personal or professional stories in leadership communication helps build trust and resonate with your audience.

2. Make It a Conversation, Not a Presentation
Michael Bungay Stanier transformed his talk into a two-way conversation. Without relying on slides, he used humor and invited audience participation, keeping the session interactive. Leaders can adopt this approach to foster a more engaging environment, whether in team meetings or larger presentations.

3. Use Movement and Visuals Purposefully
Megan Hyatt Miller showcased how strategic body language and clear, minimalistic slides can enhance message delivery. Moving purposefully and making eye contact with all parts of the room can help leaders build connections and keep the entire audience engaged.

4. Build Trust with Authenticity
Tiffany Aliche's ability to share real, personal experiences created an instant bond with her audience. Authentic communication fosters trust and makes your message more relatable. Leaders can connect deeply with teams by sharing genuine stories that reflect their journey and values.

Leadership Communication Tips for Immediate Impact
If you're a leader looking to enhance your communication skills, here are a few quick, practical steps:

Incorporate storytelling in your message to inspire and captivate.
Engage your audience by asking questions or inviting responses.
Slow down, pause, and be present, allowing your listeners to process key points.

Share your energy and authenticity, creating a memorable and positive impression.

Applying these tips can transform your leadership communication style into one that builds connection and boosts engagement. Whether you’re addressing a small team or a large audience, these methods help convey authority, inspire trust, and make a lasting impact.

I'm in a season where my work is propelling me forward each week.

I'm grateful for this reality - where my business is helping me hone my purpose, use my gifting, build meaningful relationships, and craft my future.

I don't take it for granted, and know that this often proves to be elusive for so many people.

"What exactly do you do, Jason?" is a question I hear a lot.

It's not about what I do. It's about the challenges I help my clients take on and work through so they can find their confidence, contentment and power in life and in work.

Here's a snapshot of my past month and how I've helped leaders and their teams:

TEAMS:
🔁 Helped an executive team at an incredible non-profit continue their work on being a stronger, more cohesive team by focusing on giving and receiving feedback with one another and their teams...so they can serve their clients with even more impact.

🎯 Supported an all-day session for a senior leadership team working on their mission and vision for the road ahead. This included some much-appreciated team building and will no doubt help them chart a faster path toward their growth goals. (took in a Celts playoff game with !)

🏆 Delivered two company-wide workshops on "Building Your Emotional Intelligence to Make Your Customer the Hero" to an interior design business.
COMMUNICATION:
📽 Coached 11 high-potential leaders at a medical device company as they created and delivered Ted style talks as part of their graduation.

🎙 Helped a newly-minted physician nail her commencement address to 500+ audience members. She went from "getting through it" to "nailing it."

🚫 💤 Led a team of 25 software engineers, researchers and business analysts through a strategic framework for communicating to drive results (instead of data dumping).

EXECUTIVE COACHING:
💪 Engaged with 10+ 1:1 executive coaching clients - tackling challenges related to delegation, overcoming imposter syndrome, building executive presence, managing expectations, and aligning personal values to their leadership style.

If you're a leader who is ready to grow and develop your own capabilities or your team's ability to work together, let's talk.

Entrepreneurs Dilemma

I miss my clients when I’m not with them.

It’s a strange dance as a solopreneuer executive coach who does a lot of speaking.

The First Part: Going from the push and pull of
- planning a talk
- obsessing about my listeners and their reality, what they care about
- finding the right level of content depth
- crafting the best visuals to supplement the talking points
- then getting mentally prepared to connect, engage and be “full on” when I’m with them and up on stage

And, then there’s side that has always been so weird to me…

The Second Part: Coming Down
- driving in silence back to the airport
- barely engaging with anyone on a deep level while waiting at the airport
- decompressing and experiencing the adrenaline let down from “mission accomplished” on the flight home
- returning to my home office or coffee shop the next day to complete the follow-up work and preparing my next engagement

It truly feels like a tale of two worlds. And yet, both are so necessary to keep the experience engaging and impactful to both my listeners/clients and myself.

Focused energy and engagement followed by white space. With the tedious, less-than-desirable (for me) tasks of submitting expenses, sending invoices and doing administrative tasks.

One is necessary to keep opening space and opportunity for the other. The cycles of entrepreneurship and running a business - it’s been so much fun figuring this out full-time for the past two years.

Back to the planning board today…

Enjoyed helping this crew use words to move their personal missions and businesses forward!

It doesn't have to be complicated:

1. Identify the problem you/your organization solves
2. Position your product or service as the solution to the problem
3. Clearly state the results (aka improved life) your product/solution provides

We call it the One-Liner and it's one of the most powerful tools you can put into your communication arsenal.

Thanks for having me, SMPS—Society for Marketing Professional Services!

When you communicate, do you data dump or move people to take action and buy in to your ideas?

Data dumpers commit to playing the Hero:
1. Are more committed to sharing ALL of the information
2. Don’t have a clear desired outcome for the interaction
3. Focus on THEIR needs instead of the listeners’ needs

Great communicators commit to playing the Guide:

1. Share information to MOVE their listeners toward an outcome
2. Are crystal clear on what they want from the interaction
3. Obsess over what keeps their listeners up at night and what gets them out of bed in the morning

Data Dumpers make it all about themselves. Guides make it all about moving their listeners from where they are to where they want to be.

Very few know how to play the Guide, and all of us must continually work to manage our inner Hero out of the way.

Had a blast recently helping 25 product managers learn a simple framework for communicating to drive their listeners to action.

Three MUST HAVES for being a high-performing leader and team:

1. 🪞Self-awareness
2. 👂Active listening
3. 🗣️Impactful communication delivery skills (how you say it)

Without these at the core of your capability set, you’re bound to step on some toes, miss out on opportunities for empathy, and pass up the chance to coach others on your team. Plus, your ideas won’t get the traction they deserve.

Working on your leadership skills doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with one area and choose one shift to work on.

Had a blast working with finance leaders at Honda yesterday in partnership with and .

We covered much ground on 1-3 above in a few short hours. And, dang, I LOVE being back in person with groups.

Can you be a high-performing leader and team without being an effective communicator? I’d place a strong vote for “NO”, but welcome your thoughts - comment below!
