2023 Reflections on CISO Hiring Trends

As we move forward into 2024, I wanted to share some key learnings from our experience in hiring multiple Chief Information Security Officers last year. Here's what stood out:

• Convergence of Roles: The blending of IT and security responsibilities has become a dominant trend, highlighting the need for security leaders to bolster their IT skills to stay competitive and adaptable.

• Beyond Titles: I confirmed that job titles like "CISO" had minimal impact on the core aspects of the role. Organizations are prioritizing the substance of the role and the actual impact leaders make over the prestige of titles.

• Innovative Sourcing: Traditional recruitment methods faltered under the volume of candidates. Instead, more direct sourcing through employee referrals, firm networks, and even clients proved highly effective and efficient.

• Stable Compensation and Contractual Changes: Despite industry challenges, compensation for security leaders remained stable. Interestingly, while formal contracts were rare, many leaders secured D&O insurance coverage, adding a layer of liability protection.

Hey folks...... As we get ready to depart for the holidays, I wanted to give a shout out to all our followers and customers. 2022 was a busy year and 2023 promises to be the same. We have a few things on community side we wanted to let you know are coming in Q123- First, we are going to release a pretty substantial update to our open source career ladders. It has been almost 16 months since an update so it is due. Secondly, we are going to finish up our series around security we started a few weeks back. Lastly, we have put together a "privacy-by-design" requirements list that folks can use to meet some of your PdB compliance requirements. Look for these starting the first week in January ....
