Day 2 at Lincoln Elementary in Town of Wi******er, MA! Fourth grade students learn how important it is to document a site during an excavation, and they became adept at measuring and recording the artifacts they found. And with at least four early 19th century houses across the street, artifacts were plentiful! These artifacts enabled us to put together a story about what was happening and who was living here then.

Have I finally reached rock star status?

When fourth graders say that it was the best activity of the year and want my autograph (even on rocks when there's no paper), I know that I've provided memories that will last a lifetime. And to do it while meeting the history/social science standards? Icing on the cake.

Whether it's learning about Native American migration theories, mending pots, or excavating real artifacts, students learn that history and archaeology can be the most exciting and interesting subjects.

Thank you to the Byam School Association - BSA for making our standards-based archaeology program possible at Byam Elementary in Chelmsford this week! Fourth graders are learning how to excavate a "real" site with actual, historical artifacts. They are also mapping, sifting, and cleaning those artifacts with genuine archaeological tools. Learning about the past with hands-on activities is how excitement is built and memories are made.
