Long Island — Did You Know? 🌱

Miracle-Gro, the fertilizer that changed American gardening, has its roots on Long Island.

In the late 1940s, Horace Hagedorn, an advertising executive from Sands Point, partnered with Rutgers horticulturist Wes Davidson, who had developed a promising water-soluble plant formula but lacked funding and marketing support.

Hagedorn named the product Miracle-Gro, promoted it nationally through radio shows like The Garden Club of the Air, and helped make it one of the first widely used water-soluble fertilizers — fast, effective, and easy for everyday home gardeners.

In 1995, Miracle-Gro merged with Scotts, forming a gardening powerhouse. Hagedorn later became a well-known Long Island philanthropist, supporting hospitals, education, and public parks until his death in 2005.

A backyard breakthrough…
that grew into a national brand.
