When you enjoy what you do for a living this much - is it truly work?

We had an amazing week of field work this week. Our studies included bacteria sampling in White Oak & Rock creeks - a project that we are collaborating with Texas Water Resources Institute; a human contact recreation study of swimming areas and parks at Lake Cypress Springs for Franklin County Water District, and assisting the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on a metals in fish tissue sampling on Lake O’ the Pines. For the Lake O’ the Pines study, we collected in Big Cypress Creek and in the headwaters and in the coves of the middle portion of the reservoir.

Weeks like this one remind us of how fortunate that we are to have chosen careers in the aquatic sciences. The weather was absolutely perfect along with the pleasure of working with a group of incredible scientists.

This is a reminder that tomorrow is our last day to accept orders for YSI and SonTek instruments. This does not affect delivery, invoices, or warranties provided by the manufacturers that we represent. All warranty, repairs, and technical support are available directly through the manufacturers.

As Water Monitoring Solutions, Inc. commences its 25th year in business, we are reminded of our many loyal clients who have helped us reach this incredible milestone. We recognize and appreciate that this achievement would not be possible without you. We have always done our best to provide outstanding service with honesty, integrity, and transparency. We sincerely want to thank you for continued business over the past quarter-century!

We have had the great fortune to know and work with many intelligent, talented, and wonderful people over the years who share our commitment to the environment, water resources, and to the biota that inhabit those watersheds. Many of you have become close associates and friends, and we cannot thank you enough for the trust you have placed in WMS. We are grateful to have known and worked with you throughout this journey.

As many are aware, WMS operates two sides of our business – sales and consulting. Over the past decade, our consulting business has grown to a point where we can no longer support both sides of our business. After much contemplation, we have made the very difficult decision to focus our energies on consulting services including water quality and quantity data collection, biological and habitat sampling, data and statistical analysis, and reporting.

Effective February 28, 2026, WMS will no longer represent Xylem including YSI and SonTek instruments. This change does not affect delivery or invoicing of orders placed by February 27, 2026, nor does it impact warranties provided by the manufacturers that we represent. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Thank you again!

Last week, we had the privilege of attending the 39th Annual TCEQ Surface Water Monitoring Workshop and Clean Rivers Program partner’s meeting. The partner’s meeting provides updates to program objectives and activities along with presentations by the partner organizations.

There were two especially interesting talks during the CRP session. One was a presentation by three river authorities about the advantages and challenges of bacterial source tracking collection and analysis. The other was a fascinating study by the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority measuring ammonia toxicity and its effects on mussels populations. They are currently in the process of publishing these results.

The SWQM sessions included habitat restoration work being performed by the Meadows Center, fish assemblages and assessment by Texas State University, and water quality data and trends after TMDL implementation by Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Water Monitoring Solutions, Inc was proud to provide a demonstration to attendees on the use of the SonTek, a Xylem Brand RS5 Acoustic Doppler Profiler. This special flow session also included training on the FlowTracker 2 Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter.

This was an incredible meeting. Kudos to the TCEQ staff who organized the event.

We completed our biological monitoring work for the year over the past few days. Our sites included a tributary to Caddo Lake and a couple of streams in Hopkins County.

Fish diversity was amazing! We collected over 30 taxa in the Caddo Lake tributary! Both of the Hopkins County sites had over 20 species each.

We’re already looking forward to monitoring these stations again next year.

We had the pleasure of presenting the results of our nutrient impairment study of Lake Cypress Springs at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Surface Water Quality Monitoring workshop. This was the very first nutrient impairment study in Texas. The results suggest that the high pH impairment in the reservoir is driven by primary productivity.

Although chlorophyll-a and pH were not strongly correlated, this may be due to sampling at 0.3-meter below the surface rather than using depth integrated sampling methods. However, using dissolved oxygen percent saturation as a surrogate for algae, this parameter strongly correlated with pH throughout the diel studies. Some of those correlations were as high as 1.00 and averaged around 0.9 at all stations. The results of this study along with two other special studies are available at:

We also assisted with training TCEQ and Clean Rivers Program partners on measuring flow using the SonTek, a Xylem Brand FlowTracker 2 ADV.

This winter, the WMS team authored technical reports for the TCEQ’s Clean Rivers Program in the Cypress Creek, Sulphur River, and the Canadian & Red River basins. These reports included a review of recent water quality data, current and draft assessments of standards, statistical analysis of historical data, and evaluated the effects of drought and flood cycles on water quality. These reports, in total, consisted of over 155K words (but who’s counting) and nearly 600 pages.

All reports have recently been approved by TCEQ for publishing. To download or view the reports, please visit the following sites:
