Last night at approximately 7PM Sumner Fire was notified of a natural cover fire south of town. Upon arrival of the brush truck it was found to be a large fire in corn stubble and grass. Mendon Fire Protection District was requested mutual aid to respond to the scene. Crews brought the fire under control around 8PM and cleared the scene around 9PM after clean up. We would like to thank Mendon for their assistance on this fire.

This morning at around 9:30 AM Sumner Community Fire Protection District and Mendon Fire Protection District were dispatched to flood waters north of Sumner for a vehicle in the water. Crews arrived on scene shortly after and found 1 vehicle stranded in the water. Luckily this incident didn’t result in any injuries and the driver was safe.

Thank you to our emergency services partners for their assistance on this incident.

We would like to take this time to remind the community to not drive through flood waters. The water can hide road washouts, debris, and other unknown hazards.

Around 4PM today Sumner Fire was notified of a natural cover fire West of town near Lakeside Cemetery. Sumner Fire responded with Brush 4, the UTV, Pumper 1, and 4 personnel. Upon arrival crews found a fast moving fire in tall grass that also was burning timber. The crews began attack utilizing handtools and water. Approximatley 30 minutes into the incident Hale Fire was requested for manpower and another UTV. Crews worked together for nearly 2 hours to fully extinguish this fire. Thank you Hale Fire for your quick response and help!

Notice: The replacement project for bridge #01000042 on Pershing Road will begin on August 19, 2024. The road will be closed at that location until the expected completion date of November 9, 2024.

Sumner Community Fire Protection District loaned our Polaris Ranger to Mendon Fire Protection District to be used at the Mendon Town Festival and Tractor pull today. They are utilizing it as a first response vehicle around the festival and for standby at the tractor pull. Mendon Fire is one of our best mutual aid partners who always assist us without question. We are always happy to help our neighbors in any way we can!

Today at 5:57 PM Sumner Community Fire Protection District was dispatched to a structure fire northeast of Sumner. Mendon Fire Protection District, Hale Fire Protection District, and Laclede Fire were dispatched on auto mutual aid to the scene. Chariton County Ambulance District and Linn County Ambulance District were also dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival at 6:05 crews found a metal outbuilding fully involved. Crews initiated a defensive attack with the assistance of our mutual aid partners. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes and crews remained on scene for approximately another hour conducting overhaul operations.

We would like to thank our mutual aid, EMS, and law enforcement partners for their assistance on the scene.

We would like to thank Midwest Public Safety Equipment, LLC for their assistance in finding a new light bar for our pumper. This light bar will replace the original one from 2008 that had several modules that were not working and could not be repaired. Kyler has a wide variety of emergency equipment and is easy to work with!

Shortly after noon today Sumner Community Fire Protection District was dispatched to a possible structure fire south of Pershing Park. Upon arrival crews found no structures in the area burning. They were then notified of a natural cover fire east of Sumner on 139. Crews responded to that scene and extinguished the fire. The district responded with 3 apparatus and 5 firefighters. All units returned to service 30 minutes after initial dispatch
