Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:19 “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before your life and death, the blessing and the curse. So, choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants…”

Observation: Some came easy, others were hard. My wife, Carolyn, and I sat and prayed. We pray regarding every decision we make. Some of the choices are easy while others are very difficult, but one thing on which we always held firm was to find the peace of Christ in those decisions together.

Today's verse speaks of the choice between life and death, between the blessing and the curse. There were times when we didn't want to make the decision but knew it had to be made: like leaving a church family, deciding to go against the grain when everyone else was going one way, or choosing to discipline our children when it wasn't easy. Those choices were choices about living, but the choice spoken of in today's verse is speaking of eternity. The choice between living with God or not for all eternity. So, whether it's a living choice or a life choice be sure to spend some time in prayer. Seek His peace above all. Some decisions will still be easy and others hard, but you will have a peace the world will not understand to make the right decision.

Scripture: Psalm 127:2 “It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.”

Observation: I worked 120 hours a week going from one job to another. I thought I was giving love to my family. I have been down this road – where it was all about work and money. Funny thing though, the people that mattered most to me (my wife and children) who I thought I was loving, were the ones being hurt.

I thought that the more money I made, the more I was loving them. I wasn’t loving them; I was hurting them by taking myself out of the picture. Think about it. What would you rather have: wealth or just one person who cares for and loves you? Some of us prefer the money. I pray that we all choose to follow God’s direction for our lives and not make it about work, but about love. If we take one thing from today’s verse, let it be that we need to take time away from work to re-examine our priorities.

Scripture: John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Observation: I had never met him. While waiting in a long line to get into an event, a gentleman entered the end of the line with his wife. As the line began to move, I noticed that the gentleman was on oxygen and walking was difficult at best. I could have just minded my own "P's and Q's," but I took a bold step. I told the man and his wife, to cut the line at the front, so he didn't have to struggle to wait and walk.

Today's verse speaks of men knowing that we are His disciples by how we love one another. I could tell the wife didn't want or expect anyone to let him cut the line, but I gently asked another man in the front of the line to allow the elderly gentleman ahead. “No problem,” he replied, and the gentleman and wife stepped in front of them. I didn't share a Bible verse or the gospel message, but I shared love. I share this with you as an example not for any other reason but to bring glory to God. A simple act, a helping hand, for others can be done by anyone. That's if we choose to be known as His disciples. Are we known by our actions? Remember the world is watching for signs, wonders, and miracles to help them believe. Are you helping?

2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.

Scripture: Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Observation: Only we know what we are about. What I mean is, when we are alone and no one else is around, that’s when we find out if we truly know and live for Jesus Christ. I am not a world traveler by any sense of the word. In fact, I’m not even an out-of-state kind of guy. My life is lived within about 100 square miles. So, when I do travel long distance, that is when I see another side of me.

Am I the same servant of Christ when no one knows me? Do I hold tight to His Ways or am I the kind of guy who just talks the talk and walks the walk when it’s easy. Am I ashamed to pull out my Bible in public, or is it just for Sunday morning service? If I see someone in need do I offer help, or do I hide. If I have been transformed deep inside, the answers to those questions are obvious. However, if I have not buried His Word deep within me and learned what it really means to be a follower of Christ, then I really don’t know what it means to live for Jesus. Walking with Christ is a day-to-day thing. If He lives IN us, we must live Him OUT in our lives. Are you?

Scripture: Ephesians 4:22-24. “…that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

Observation: Living in western New York, you can feel the change of summer to fall take place. The air is a little crisper, the wind a little colder, and the color of the leaves begin to change. Today's verse speaks of our former manner of life and a new self – a change in nature. When I was living as an angry man, I knew I needed a change in my nature. I began to see my nature as that of Christ's and not of my former self. I had to get rid of the old self, difficult as it was, to see the newness of life through the Spirit of God.

No one likes to change. Those living in western New York don't really look forward to shoveling snow or dealing with the cold. However, without the change in nature, we wouldn't see the touch of God upon this earth. A change in our own nature will allow God's touch upon our lives. A life that can then begin to change those around us. Don't be corrupted by the old but begin new with the change God is calling us to.
