The Power of No, an excerpt from The BOLD Business Book
Tidbit 2: The Power of No
Never underestimate the power of no. When I started my business, I said yes all the time—yes to clients, yes to friends, yes to vendors, yes to family, yes to charities, yes to advertisers. I was a yes man to the world. Do you know where this was leading me? To no-man’s land. I was basically in a desert with a lot of stuff to do and not enough time or money to do it. I was overcommitted and had little to show for it, save for a very long to-do list. If you do this, you’ll also have a list of people who you believe will be exceedingly annoyed if you don’t satisfy their expectations. If you’re doing this, stop and rethink your strategy.
When someone comes to you asking for your help, you need to ask a few simple questions:

What will happen if I decide not to do this?
Will it hurt our relationship?
Will I enjoy this?
Will the world be better if I do this?
Will the world be measurably better or just idealistically?
Let’s say I help this person now. What if in three years, I desperately need this person’s help. Will this person be willing to drop everything to help me? If the answer is no, you have your answer as well.
What is the opportunity cost of doing or not doing this?
