In this new phase of my life when I’m building my businesses, coaching executives, advising entrepreneurs, reimagining the legal profession and legal education, deepening my energetic and spiritual practices, living life n my own terms, and focusing on what’s important to me, my word of the year “ruthless” is my guiding principle. What’s yours?

Every quarter I do something that scares me.

This quarter: a seaplane over Vancouver.

It happened last week at TED2026, right before a dinner about the future of TEDLaw with Nishat Ruiter, GC of TED, and .

Here is the thing about the ritual. Some of you know I have been dealing with health issues since my trip to Asia. That was not the scary thing I chose. That was the one that arrived uninvited.

Today I got some good news. Not out of the woods yet, but better than last week. And even if the news had gone the other way, I would have been ready.

That is the point.

You don’t build resilience during a crisis. You build it before one. Practicing chosen fear is how I stay steady when unchosen fear shows up.

What is your scary thing this quarter? Not the one life handed you. The one you picked on purpose.

Tell me in the comments. I want to know who else is training for the unchosen.

I haven’t been on IG much lately, so I figured it was time to reintroduce myself.
I’m leaving academia next month to focus more deeply on legal education, the legal profession, the future of work, AI, and mental wellbeing. I am excited about what is ahead.
Stay tuned for what’s next, and let me know how I can support you.

I haven’t done a solo post since New Year’s Eve. Since coming back from Asia, I’ve been hospitalized twice and my medical team is still not happy about my numbers. I went for weeks without being able to keep food or water down and over a week when I was in so much pain, I cried in my sleep and didn’t know if I would walk again. So walking two miles today was a blessing even if it was a lesson I didn’t plan on learning.

Happy New Year from Vietnam 🇻🇳

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions.

I resolve to get better every day and I never beat myself up for not accomplishing what I set out to do. Life happens.

When you think of every day as a fresh start, and sometimes every hour, it takes the pressure off.

I do pick a word for the year though.

This year my word is ruthless.

I know that sounds odd for someone with lotus, om, and chakra tattoos, but it’s actually one of the most spiritual words I know.

I plan to be ruthless with how I spend my time. If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a hell no, unless I’m legally, financially, morally, or ethically required to do it.

I’ll be ruthless with who I work with and who I volunteer with. If it doesn’t help advance the legal profession, legal education, responsible AI, human rights, or the fate of democracy, I’m not doing it.

Unless it’s fun.

I’ll also be ruthless about rest.

There have been seasons where I worked fourteen hours a day for weeks at a time, weekends included.

When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.
But it still feels like work to your body.

So I’ll be ruthless with access to my time and energy.

And I’ll be ruthless about letting go of control. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be moving through several cities in Vietnam with a side trip to Cambodia.

Other than flights and hotels, I’m going with the flow. That’s usually when the best ideas and relationships show up.

I’m looking forward to the best year of my life.
Are you?
Do you have a word or mantra for 2026?

Snow in Brooklyn one day, sun in Saigon the next day. After 22 hours of flight time, the hotel room isn’t ready yet but I am. This trip to Vietnam is to honor my father for his last wishes. But today, it’s all about the warmth. Happy New Year’s Eve!

I live across the street from a beach for a reason.
I do not like the cold.

So walking three miles in 27 degree weather on a Sunday morning was a choice.
I could have stayed inside with hot cocoa.

Instead, I went out to train.

Next fall, I will walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
Eight to ten miles a day.
Day after day.
Weather included.

Today was part of that training.
Cold exposure. Cardio. Nervous system regulation. Discipline.

If I had stayed in with cocoa, I would have missed this snowman.
Pink scarf. Scrunchie. Cigarette. Completely unbothered.

Instead, I got my steps, regulated my nervous system, and a moment of unexpected joy.

Everyone else was walking dogs or clearing sidewalks.
Then there was me.
The Florida girl training herself to do hard things on purpose.

Worth it.

If you could only choose one this morning, which would you have chosen?
Cocoa or training?

Every day, we choose.

Should we play it safe or be bold?

Do we rest or rise?

Do we lead or follow?

The signs are everywhere.

Some are loud and some are subtle.

Each direction shapes who we become as leaders, colleagues, and humans.

What matters most isn’t the right choice.

It’s whether we’re choosing consciously because when you choose with intention, even a detour becomes direction.

I welcome the divine detours.

What choice are you making today by default or by design?

Yes, the doctor told me to stay off my feet for a couple of days and after “resting,” I walked four miles and then danced for hours to old school dancehall at birthday party. And yes my ankle hurts again. But life is too short not to have fun. So I’m taking it easy again. Was it worth it? What do you think? And yes I would do it again.
