Yesterday, several of our firefighters took time away from their regular jobs and personal responsibilities to bring our engines and tankers to Bucksport for our annual hose testing.

Annual hose testing is a critical part of that process. Every fire hose on our apparatus is inspected and pressure tested to ensure it can safely withstand the demands of firefighting operations. A damaged or failed hose can put firefighters at risk and delay the delivery of water during an emergency. By testing our hose annually, we help ensure our equipment remains reliable, safe, and ready to perform when seconds count.

While emergency responses often receive the spotlight, it’s days like yesterday that help ensure we’re prepared for tomorrow’s emergencies.

We're excited to announce that we've been awarded a grant from the Maine Municipal Association for over $1500 to purchase traffic control signs for our new engine.

Every year first responders are injured and killed in secondary accidents at emergency scenes on roadways. Even on smaller accidents, we take pride in setting up traffic control to provide safety for law enforcement and tow truck operators to do their jobs safely.

When accidents happen on roadways, setting up these warning signs is crucial in providing advance warning to other drivers to slow down before they get to the accident scene. The signs pictured are from our rescue and having a matching set on our engine helps ensure we can get signs deployed safely and quickly as often as possible based on the type of call and number of volunteers available to respond.

Thank you for your patience, attention, and cooperation while driving through emergency scenes, your cooperation is critical to keeping everyone safe.

Today Firefighters D.Astbury and J. Wallace-DeJulio paid their respects to fallen firefighter Andrew Cross who tragically lost his life in the Searsmont Robbin’s lumber mill fire. He will be forever remembered for his courage, strength and dedication to the fire service as well as his town! We may not be in the same county, but we’re in the same family always! The surry fire department extends our condolences to Andrew’s family and the Morrill Fire Department as well as all of the other firefighters that were injured!

Tonight, we issued new helmets to all of our volunteers who have completed the fire schools required to meet state standards for interior firefighting. Hundreds of hours of training are required to meet these minimum standards. To recognize their effort, each firefighter received a helmet shield with their name and radio number on it in recognition of their accomplishment.

The Blue Hill road is closed on Surry Hill in the vicinity of 312 Blue Hill road due to an accident. Seek other routes between Blue Hill and Surry village.

This weekend Surry volunteers joined other departments from across the Blue Hill peninsula for a two-day hands-on training on firefighter rescue and self-rescue by Maineiac Fire Training, hosted by Penobscot Vol. Fire Dept.

Sixteen volunteers from five departments spent two full days hard at work, practicing getting themselves and their fellow firefighters out of dangerous situations; through walls, doors, windows, and floors. They learned and demonstrated new techniques and tactics, then put them to work in rescue scenarios with their vision blocked while breathing from airpacks to simulate fire conditions.

In addition to valuable experience, training with mutual aid partners like this builds strong camaraderie and trust across departments. Skills must be practiced to be maintained and we value all of the volunteers giving so much of their personal time to better serve their communities.

Just in time for Christmas, our new fire engine has arrived in Surry! 🚒❄️🎁

Fresh from manufacturing and testing. The International truck chassis was purchased from Colwell Diesel in Ellsworth. The body was purchased from K&T Fire Equipment in Island Falls and manufactured by Metalfab Fire Trucks in Centreville, N.B.

Thank you to the citizens of Surry, current and past selectboards, and all of our volunteers for their support through this three-year journey.

There's still a lot of work to be done to prepare it for service. We'll be hard at it over the next few weeks preparing the engine for hoses, tools, and other equipment, as well as training our drivers and pump operators on its use. We'll have more news in January when the engine is ready to be used for emergency response. We'll welcome everyone to come see it then.
