Sansui G-9000DB Stereo Receiver — Full Restoration Complete

If you know vintage receivers, you know the name. The G-9000DB is the "greatest of the monster receivers" — Sansui's answer at the peak of the 1970s watt wars. Built 1978-79, it pushes 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and unlike the standard G-9000, the "DB" version adds Dolby circuitry, making it the rarer and more desirable of the two.

This thing is a beast in every sense — almost 60 pounds, with individual left and right toroidal power transformers instead of one shared unit, feeding a bank of Sansui's own Dynamic Oval Capacitors on each channel. Sansui didn't cut a single corner building these, and it shows the moment you pull the cover.

This one needed real attention inside. Here's what we did:

Full disassembly
Complete recap of both power supply channels
Protection relay serviced and tested
All boards cleaned and inspected
Bias adjustment and full alignment
Full cleaning, reassembly and hours of testing

Sony STR-6800SD Stereo Receiver — Full Restoration Complete

Sony wasn't chasing the biggest watt number with the STR-6800SD — they were chasing precision. Built in 1976-78, it puts out 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms with a MOS-FET front end and a 4-gang varicap tuner for dead-accurate reception, plus one of the earliest implementations of Dolby FM to cut noise on the airwaves. Plenty of collectors will tell you this is one of the best-sounding Sony receivers ever made — a quieter, more refined alternative to the era's power-war monsters.

Inside it's clean, well-laid-out engineering — separate boards for tuner, amp, and power sections, all built to Sony's usual exacting standard.

This one needed some real TLC to bring it back to spec. Here's what we did:

Full disassembly
Complete recap across the amplifier and power supply boards
All switches and controls cleaned and lubricated
Dolby FM and tuner sections serviced
Bias adjustment and full alignment
Full reassembly and testing

Pioneer SX-1250 Stereo Receiver — Full Restoration Complete

The SX-1250 sits at the top of Pioneer's legendary 1970s receiver lineup, and a lot of collectors will tell you it's the best receiver Pioneer ever built. Released in 1976 with a $900 price tag (real money back then), it broke every power record of its day: 160 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms, 20Hz–20kHz, at under 0.1% THD — numbers Pioneer never matched again in a receiver.

Under the hood it's a direct-coupled DC amplifier with a dual-mono power supply — a massive toroidal transformer and separate power circuits for each channel — built for stability and clean channel separation rather than just a big number on the spec sheet. It's heavy, it's overbuilt, and it still holds up against modern gear.

This one came to us tired and dirty inside, but structurally solid. Here's what we did:

Full disassembly, faceplate and control panel stripped down
Complete recap and power supply rebuild
All switches, pots, and controls cleaned and restored
Bias adjustment and full alignment
Full cleaning, reassembly and testing

🎵 MCS 3865 Stereo Integrated Amplifier — Full Restoration Complete 🎵

MCS — Modular Component Systems — was JC Penney's house brand for audio equipment in the 1970s and '80s. Back then, audiophiles laughed at it. It was a department store brand, after all.

But here's the secret the vintage audio world has been quietly discovering: MCS contracted with Technics (Matsush*ta), NEC, and other major Japanese manufacturers — the same names behind some of the most respected vintage gear on the planet.

JC Penney held tight quality specs, and the result was solidly engineered, well-built equipment hiding behind a modest badge. It looks like this one was made by NEC Corporation of America.

Smart collectors have been quietly scooping these up for years. We think they're great. Here's what we did:

It's been a while ... but we've been busy!

🎚️ Marantz Official 2235B Stereophonic Receiver — Full Restoration Complete 🎚️

This gorgeous vintage Marantz came to us in need of some serious love, and we delivered. Here's what went into this full restoration:

✅ Fully disassembled for complete access
✅ Recap and rebuild of the amplifier section
✅ Relay pin rebuild and recap
✅ Full rebuild and recap of the control board
✅ All switches and controls repaired and cleaned
✅ Bias adjustment
✅ Display lamps replaced

The result? This classic receiver looks and sounds like it just rolled off the Marantz factory floor in 1975. That blue dial glow hits different when everything behind it is fresh and dialed in. 🔵

We’re keeping the vintage streak alive 🔧✨

On the bench this week: a beautifully built Pioneer Electronics (North America) SX-828 Stereo Receiver — a standout from Pioneer’s silver-face era.

This one came in tired but complete, so we gave it the attention it earned:

✔️ Power supply service and reliability updates
✔️ Replacement of aging electrolytics where needed
✔️ Thorough cleaning of controls, switches, and selector paths
✔️ Bias and DC offset dialed in to spec
✔️ Inspection of amplifier, tuner, and protection circuits
✔️ Careful cosmetic cleanup while preserving original character

The SX-828 is known for its smooth, full-bodied sound with plenty of headroom — rated around 50+ watts per channel. It’s a great example of when build quality and musicality went hand in hand.

This week on the bench: a legendary Pioneer Electronics (North America) SX-1050 — one of the heavy hitters of the silver-face era.

This unit came in needing a full service, so we went through it top to bottom:
✔️ Full power supply, regulator, and protection circuit rebuild
✔️ New relay and filter capacitors
✔️ Complete recap of amp, phono, regulator, and input boards
✔️ Phono board rebuild
✔️ Repair and deep cleaning of all switches and controls

The SX-1050 is known for its massive build and effortless power — rated at around 120 watts per channel, with the kind of headroom and warmth that made Pioneer a household name in hi-fi.
