Every foster care journey begins with a simple decision: to open your heart and home to a child in need.

Today, we’re honored to spotlight one of our incredible foster parents as they share their personal fostering journey—the challenges, the joys, the growth, and the lasting impact fostering has had on their family.

Their story is a powerful reminder that fostering isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present, providing stability, and offering hope when it matters most.

Thank you to all of our foster families who continue to make a difference in the lives of children every day. Your compassion, dedication, and love help create brighter futures.

Watch the video below to hear firsthand what fostering means to this amazing family.

My name is Debbie Smiley and I currently work as Foster Care Director for Davidson Family Services.

I was born and raised in the Cleveland County area and worked most of my clinical years in Charlotte. I began my journey working with the MH/ IDD population. I knew then working with individuals to meet their highest potential was my calling.

Before entering the field, was a pastor's wife for 10 years working at a private school with youth who could not stay in public school.

Moving forward after 25 years I am still working with MH/IDD population in Foster Care. I went back to college during this time and received my master's degree in Counseling and Psychology.

It has been so rewarding over the years watching children come into care and heal both physically and emotionally. Many in care have found forever homes. I work for the greatest agency and team of foster care professionals. They all bring knowledge and experience to the team.

My personal joy is having three sons, five grandchildren, one great granddaughter and one great grandson. Family time is important, making my greatest memories. I am involved with my church and enjoy singing on our praise team.

I feel life has been good to me and all of my experiences in life, whether good or bad, have equipped me to have compassion and empathy for others.

I try to wake up every day with an open mind and hope to be a problem solver for those in need and thankful for all the wonderful people I have met in my life.

May is Foster Care Awareness, and I would like to thank all of our DFS parents who have taken children into their home and worked with them to find normalcy. We consider our families the absolute best.

There is a shortage of Foster Parents in NC, please let us know if you are interested in how you can help foster care.

At Davidson Family Services, we believe mental health is just as important as physical health. For individuals with I/DD, emotional wellness, support, understanding, and access to quality care can make all the difference.

This month, we want to remind everyone that it’s okay to ask for help, take a break, and prioritize your well-being. Every person deserves to feel heard, valued, and supported.

Let’s work together to break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a community where everyone feels safe to speak openly and seek support.

Be kind. Be patient. Check on one another.
Mental health matters—today and every day. 💚
