Nice to see an old mill still running. Contrary to popular belief, traditional technology can be just as viable, if not more in some cases, than modern centralized production. Not to mention a more pleasing process for the operators!

When Garland Mill began operations in 1856 – five years before the start of the Civil War – there were more than 600 water-powered sawmills in New Hampshire. One hundred-sixty…

The EAB epidemic has devastated White Ash trees in nearly everywhere but northern New England. However, new cases are being reported in New Hampshire. There are numerous reasons, aside from baseball, to be concerned about this borer and the effects that it, and other invasive species, have on our woodlands. More information here:

Climate change may also imperil the sport

I am excited to be the new steward of this 20 acres of woodland in southern Oxford County. A classic mixed hardwood forest with many fine old examples of "Grandfather" trees (not photgraphed yet).

Not much activity lately. My regular work has been keeping me busy but fall is coming and I hope to be back in the woods shortly. Firewood production starting this fall, beginning with maintenance of a coppiced Beech stand, and thinning a small plot for future building construction.

A couple of "after" pictures from the first real SFW job. This area was heavily grown over with sapplings and several larger trees. Four 8-14" dbh trees were cut, along with several 4-6 inchers, and about 300' sq. of sappling growth. The slash piles still present will be chipped for the base of a ground cover and future shade garden. The results will allow more afternoon sun to the farm's gardens, and release the best remaining trees from competition. Another benefit is the new beautiful evening view of Pleasant Mountain. Other photos to follow as soon as they are retrieved from a failed device!

Meanwhile, back at Dr. Frankenaxe's laboratory...experimental graft of a Council 3.5lb. Jersey pattern ax handle that arrived with a warp. The ax was replaced by the vendor and they let me keep this one. It's been altered to 32" in length beyond the head, a better length for pounding wedges and felling smaller trees. It also corrected the warp slightly. Now to get a proper handle of the same length made!
