Prepare to turn a child's passion into a business this summer. Be a Trep! Youth Entrepreneurship Camp is back for year 4! This July join your local Small Business Center for a week-long youth entrepreneurship camp for any rising 6th - 9th grade student for the fall of 2026 with an interest in entrepreneurship. It will be held on the Southwestern Community College (Sylva campus) July 20-23, 2026 from 9-3 pm.

Student objectives:

~Gain insight into the entrepreneurship and business fields
~Learn what it takes to turn an idea or passion into a product or career
~Meet and learn from real entrepreneurs
~Create and develop business ideas in a fun environment
~Pitch a business idea to a panel of judges
~Make new friends

The purpose of this camp is to teach entrepreneurship as a viable career option, teach business skills, and give students the opportunity to explore the world of entrepreneurship. Through fun games, group projects, and a business simulation, students will learn business and marketing strategy, teamwork, and essential problem-solving and leadership skills.

We will be taking a field trip to downtown Sylva on July 22, where we will visit small business owners and have lunch. We will provide transportation for the field trip. On the final day of camp, campers will pitch their business idea in front of a panel of judges in the form of a contest.

Parents will be invited to the student's ‘Business Pitch Party’ on the last day of camp Thursday, July 23 at 1 pm. Lunch will be provided each day, but please bring refillable water bottles. Parents will be responsible for providing transportation to and from camp each day.

Spots will go fast so call or email now! The fee for the camp is $50 per camper and we will accept the first 20 students to register. Please contact the SBC at 828-339-4088 or email [email protected] or [email protected] to secure your spot and for registration instructions. Registration ends July 10.

EmpowHer Jackson was more than just an event — it was a powerful reminder of what happens when women come together to connect, encourage, inspire, and elevate one another! Nearly 200 entrepreneurs, small business owners, and community leaders filled the room with energy, honesty, vulnerability, wisdom, laughter, and support. The conversations were real. The stories were powerful. The impact was undeniable.

From the deeply moving keynote to the honest and inspiring panel discussion, every moment reflected the heart behind EmpowHer Jackson: Connect. Elevate. Ignite.

What made this event so meaningful was not just the attendance, but the atmosphere. Women from different industries, backgrounds, and walks of life showed up fully — to learn, to grow, to network, and to empower one another. The feedback we’ve received has been overwhelming, and it’s clear this experience resonated far beyond a single morning.

This inaugural event would not have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors, planning committee, community partners, speakers, volunteers, and the SCC PR, Events, Catering, and IT teams who helped bring this vision to life.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped to create something truly special for our community. This was just the beginning. More pics to come!

Child care is one of the biggest barriers to workforce participation in our region—and we’re seeing it firsthand.

Join us at the ExCEL NC Southwestern Council of Governments Child Care Economic Summit, a regional event bringing together business owners and leaders from across Western North Carolina to better understand the economic impact of this challenge and explore practical solutions.

📅 Thursday, April 9
🕣 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM
📍 Southwestern Community College

I’ll be speaking on a panel about what we’re doing in Jackson County to address child care and support working families.

We especially need to hear from employers. If you own or manage a business, your perspective is critical to shaping real solutions—and this is a great opportunity to connect with others across the region.

🌨️❄️ Prepare Now & Support Local Before the Storm! ❄️🌨️

With winter weather on the way, now is a great time to plan ahead and shop local before the snow arrives. Stock up on essentials, grab takeout, purchase gift cards, or check off your to-do list with local businesses. Your support helps them prepare for potential slowdowns.

A little extra support before the storm can go a long way.

Most importantly, remember to stay safe, stay warm, and follow local weather guidance. Limit travel when conditions worsen and take the time to prepare your home and family. 🥶
